Hawks Return To Road, Fall at UMSL

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team hit the road for the first time since Sept. 17, but fell to Missouri-St. Louis in straight sets, 25-19, 26-24, 25-12, on Friday (Hawktober 7) night at the Mark Twain Building in St. Louis.

The Hawks (9-8, 4-4 GLVC) were not able to match the Tritons (11-4, 6-2 GLVC) offensively as the hosts out-hit the visitors, .221 to .114. UMSL also totaled 10 service aces and led in kills, 42-32.

Quincy never led in Set 1 after the Tritons scored the first four points of the match. The second set, though, saw 10 tie scores and six lead changes as the teams played a tight frame. The Hawks led by as many as five points, 15-10, after a service ace by freshman Sara Rathbun (Stanford, Ill./Olympia), but the Tritons were able to cut into the lead and eventually go ahead, 19-17, with a 9-2 run.

The Hawks still trailed by two, 21-19, before rallying for four straight points off the service of junior Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.). The run included back-to-back kills by junior Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union), a kill by sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) and a double block by junior Miranda Rodriguez (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian).

UMSL scored the next three points, but the Hawks fought off a set point on a service error by the Tritons, who were able to put the set away with two consecutive points.

In Set 3, the Tritons jumped out to a 12-4 lead and never looked back as they hit .300 in the set.

Raebel led the Hawks with nine kills (.227) while McMonagle added eight kills (.100) and junior Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, Mich.) posted seven (.235). Rathbun distributed 22 assists and Shores led the back row with 17 digs.

The Hawks return to the court on Saturday (Hawktober 8) when they take on Maryville. First serve is set for 3 p.m. in St. Louis.
