Hawks Edged in Non-GLVC Game at Davenport, 14-10

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team held host Davenport to just 267 yards offensive yards, but the Hawks scored on just two of their four chances in the red zone, falling to the Panthers, 14-10, in nonconference play on Saturday (Hawktober 22) afternoon in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Hawks (5-3) outgained the Panthers, 333-267, and had a seven-minute advantage in time of possession, but QU had key drives stall inside Davenport territory to seal its fate.

After Quincy started the game with a punt, the Panthers (5-3) took advantage of strong field position at their own 49-yard line, scoring four plays later on a 39-yard rush by William Gist, who would finish with 150 yards on 19 carries as the Hawks struggled to stop the run.

On the second play of QU's next drive, redshirt-sophomore quarterback Robbie Kelley (Rochester, Ill.) connected with redshirt-junior tight end Owen Schoenenberger (Evansville, Wis.), who broke several tackles before fumbling after a 37-yard gain. The Panthers recovered the ball at their own 15-yard line.

The Hawks tied the game on their first possession of the second quarter as a 62-yard pass from Kelley to senior wide receiver Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick/Monroe College) set up a two-yard touchdown dive by redshirt-freshman tailback Jaylan James (St. Louis, Mo./Miller Career Academy). James now has nine touchdowns on the year.

Davenport regained the lead immediately as Keion Powers returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to give the home team a 14-7 advantage.

Quincy caught a break just before halftime as Davenport drove inside the QU 10-yard line, but a 23-yard field goal try by Patrick Gregory missed wide right kept the game at 14-7 going into the break.

The Hawks kicked off to start the second half, but Powers was stripped by freshman Briar Hancock (Paris, Mo.) and the Hawks gained possession of the ball at the Davenport 31-yard line to open the third quarter.

A five-yard pass to Schoenenberger on third down kept the drive alive as the Hawks moved to the Davenport 19-yard line before stalling. Freshman Nathan Kewney (Quincy, Ill.) missed a 37-yard field goal.

After the defense forced a punt, the Hawks sustained a long drive that took them into the red zone once again. Facing 4th-and-1 from the DU 12-yard line, James rushed for four yards to keep the drive alive. But two straight sacks on first and second downs forced QU into third-and-goal from the 20. After an incompletion, Kewney connected from 37 yards to cut the deficit to 14-10 with 13:24 to play.

The QU defense allowed just five first downs in the second half as that unit kept the Hawks in the game.

Quincy started another drive with 10:35 remaining and a 26-yard swing pass to redshirt-freshman Dominique Bobo (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade/Valparaiso)  moved QU to the Davenport 29-yard line.

The Hawks turned to the ground game to get 3rd-and-4 at the Davenport 7-yard line, but two incomplete passes handed the ball back to the Panthers, who were able to convert on two third downs to run out the clock.

Quincy finished with just 47 yards on the ground, averaging 1.4 yards per carry. Kelley was efficient through the air, going 20-for-32 for 286 yards. Schoenenberger was his top target, catching five passes for 97 yards. Poindexter had three receptions for 82 yards.

Redshirt-sophomore linebacker T.J. Daniels (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) led the defense with eight tackles, two for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Sophomore safety Shane Barrett (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) also had eight stops.

Quincy held the Panthers to just 89 passing yards, though the hosts only threw the ball 10 times, completing six passes. They ran for 178 yards on 38 carries. QU had a seven-minute advantage in time of possession, despite DU converting 8-of-14 third downs.

The Hawks will look ahead to next Saturday (Hawktober 29) when they travel to GLVC rival Truman State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. The Bulldogs (6-2, 5-0 GLVC) sit atop the conference standings.
