GAMEDAY CENTRAL: Hawks Head North To Face Davenport

Quincy University Hawks (5-2) at Davenport University Panthers (4-3)
Grand Rapids, Mich. | Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex
Hawktober 22, 2016 | 11 a.m. CT

LONGEST TRIP: The Quincy University football team will start its second two-game road trip of the season on Saturday with its longest drive of the year. QU will make the 467-mile trek northeast to outside Grand Rapids, Mich. to take on NAIA-affiliated Davenport University.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT: In July, Davenport was approved for provisional status as an NCAA Division II and Great Lakes Inttercollegiate Athletic Conference member for the 2016-17 school year. Next year, the Panthers will become full-time members of the GLIAC and they will become eligible for NCAA postseason play in the 2019-20 year. The Division II Membership Committee annually determines if the institution should be moved forward into the next year of the membership process. Davenport is in its first year sponsoring football as an intercollegiate sport, playing a mixed schedule of Division II and NAIA opponents. The Panthers are 1-1 against Division II with a 20-17 defeat at Tiffin and a 41-7 win over Kentucky Wesleyan. The Panthers will play GLVC opponent Saint Joseph's next week.

LAST WEEK: The Hawks never trailed in their first night game at QU Stadium as they soundly handled four-time defending GLVC champion Indianapolis, 33-20, last Saturday. It was Quincy's first-ever win over the Greyhounds. The Hawks are now eyeing their second three-game winning streak of the season against the Panthers.

FOURTH TD ON 'D': UIndy was driving into Quincy territory on its first possession of last week's game when redshirt-senior defensive tackle Darius Carey (Florissant, Mo./CBC) stripped Andrew Walker and sophomore safety Theo Hopkins (Chicago, Ill./Leo/Illinois State) scooped it up and ran 62 yards for the touchdown. It was Hopkins' second fumble recovery for a touchdown and the Hawks' fourth defensive touchdown of the season.

RECORD SETTER: Last week, senior wide receiver Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick/Monroe College) became Quincy's all-time leader in receiving yards, surpassing Justin Dickens (2010-13). On Quincy's all-time lists, he is tied for second in receptions and is second in receiving touchdowns.  He now sits at 46 catches, 825 yards and eight touchdowns this season.

GROUND & POUND: Holding a second-half lead, the Hawks were able to turn to their running game to maintain the ball and sustain lengthy drives. The Hawks had 200 of their 273 rushing yards in the second half, including 132 in the fourth quarter to salt the game away. Redshirt-freshman Jaylan James (St. Louis, Mo./Miller Career Academy) led the team with 112 yards with two touchdowns on 15 carries. Two other players finished with at least a dozen carries as redshirt-junior Chris Harris (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) sprang loose for 95 yards and redshirt-freshman Dominique Bobo (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade/Valparaiso) tacked on 66 yards. The Hawks gained 14 of their 22 first downs on the ground and maintained a 15-minute edge in time of possession. UIndy had the ball for just nine minutes, 48 seconds in the second half. The Hawks are fifth nationally in time of possession (34:48 per game).

FUMBLIN', BUMBLIN': Overall, the Greyhounds fumbled the ball four times last Saturday, with the Hawks picking up all four as QU was plus-3 in turnover margin. Quincy is second in the GLVC in turnover margin ( 10) and 55 of their last 101 points scored have come off turnovers. Meanwhile, the Hawks have turned the ball over 13 times this season (nine on fumbles), but their giveaways have led to just 14 opponent points.

BIG TARGET: For the second consecutive game, redshirt-junior tight end Owen Schoenenberger (Evansville, Wis.) made the most of his receptions. He caught only one pass last Saturday, but it went for a four-yard score. Each of his last three receptions has gone for a touchdown. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound bruiser is the Hawks' second-leading receiver with 24 catches for 265 yards and is tied for sixth in the GLVC with six total touchdowns. Teammates Poindexter and James are tied for the league lead in touchdowns (eight).

KELLEY THROWING: Despite not having a great day throwing the ball last week, redshirt-sophomore quarterback Robbie Kelley (Rochester, Ill.) is still on his way to an outstanding season. Kelley has completed 58.1 percent of his passes for 1,546 yards and 17 touchdowns against just three interceptions. He ranks third in the GLVC in passing yards per game (220.9) and second in passing efficiecy (149.0). His 17 touchdowns are tied for second in school history for a single season, just four behind Nick Lonergan's 21 set last year.

UP NEXT: The Hawks play their final road game next Saturday (Hawktober 29), traveling to Truman State for a rivalry game. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
