Swanson, Second Half Goals Boost QU To 3-0 Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team vented plenty of frustration on Sunday, scoring three second-half goals to beat host William Jewell, 3-0, to start Hawktober with a win.

The Hawks (3-5-2, 3-4-1 GLVC), who lost their previous two games by 1-0 scores, unleashed three goals in a matter of 17 minutes.

Quincy outshot William Jewell (1-7-2, 1-6-1 GLVC), 12-9, in the first half and 25-19 overall. Meanwhile, junior goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) made 11 saves to keep her third clean sheet of the season.

The Hawks finally broke through in the 65th minute as junior wing Natalie Quisenberry (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) took a pass from freshman midfielder Alex Severino (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline) and unleashed a long shot past WJC keeper Jordan Lewis. It was Quisenberry's first goal of the season and Severino's first assist.

With their confidence lifted, the Hawks continued to push forward and made it 2-0 in the 74th minute on a long strike from sophomore forward Cassidy Foley (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame), who became the first QU player this season with two goals. Freshman midfielder Baylee Smith (Rochester, Ill.) was credited with her first assist of the season.

With exactly 10 minutes left, Quincy added its final insurance goal on a corner kick. Quisenberry sent in a perfectly lofted ball and junior defender Allison Birke (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic/SLU) headed in her first goal of the season. Quisenberry recorded her first assist.

Swanson was brilliant on the back line for the Hawks, facing 19 shots and making 11 saves. She stopped four shots in the first half, including one on a 21-yard free kick from just outside the top of the box and stopping an indirect free kick in traffic from 14 yards. Swanson stopped seven shots in the second half.

Quincy had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Hawks return to the field on Friday (Hawktober 7) at Legends Stadium where they will take on Indianapolis at 5 p.m.
