Running Game, Defense Lead Hawks To Win Over UIndy

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team rushed for 200 yards in the second half and the defense forced four turnovers to knock off four-time defending Great Lakes Valley Conference champion Indianapolis, 33-20, on Saturday (Hawktober 15) night at QU Stadium. It was the first night game at "The Rock" since the program's reinstatement in 1986.

The Hawks (5-2, 3-2 GLVC) beat the Greyhounds (2-5, 1-3 GLVC) for the first time in five tries since both programs joined the GLVC in 2012.

On the opening drive, the 'Hounds drove to the Hawks' 37-yard line, but on a second down play, fifth-year senior defensive tackle Darius Carey (Florissant, Mo./CBC) stripped Andrew Walker and sophomore safety Theo Hopkins (Chicago, Ill./Leo/Illinois State) picked it up and took it 62 yards to the house. It was his second defensive touchdown of the season.

The teams then exchanged a couple punts before Bryce Stancombe connected with Tuwan Payton for a 66-yard touchdown down the left sideline to tie the game at 7-7 with 4:54 left in the first quarter.

The QU offense struggled to get things going in the first half, managing just 3.9 yards per play (138 total yards). But the defense picked up the slack, forcing two more turnovers in the second quarter.

After a muffed punt by the Greyhounds, the Hawks took over at the UIndy 33-yard line. Redshirt-junior running back Chris Harris (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) rushed for 18 yards, leading to a 15-yard touchdown pass from redshirt-sophomore quarterback Robbie Kelley (Rochester, Ill.) to junior wide receiver Kody Wood (Jacksonville, Ill.) to give Quincy a 14-7 lead.

A 48-yard Stancombe pass to Payton set the Greyhounds up inside the red zone, but the defense held its ground to hold the visitors to a 30-yard field goal by Brad Schickel. That cut Quincy's lead to 14-10 at halftime.

The Hawks again held in the red zone on Indianapolis' first drive of the second half as Schickel connected from 22 yards to make it 14-13.

The teams then exchanged punts before Quincy put together a 10-play, 80-yard drive, highlighted by Harris' 25-yard run and a 32-yard pass to senior wide receiver Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick/Monroe College). Redshirt-freshman tailback Jaylan James (St. Louis, Mo./Miller Career Academy) pounded it in from two yards out to push the lead to 21-13.

After the teams traded punts again, the 'Hounds drove to the Quincy 1-yard line. Facing third down, Shakir Paschall dropped Stancombe's pitch and sophomore linebacker Cody Leonard (Carrollton, Ill.) fell on it to keep Indianapolis out of the end zone.

Nursing an eight-point lead, the Hawks turned to the running game. Harris and James traded carries throughout the possession, converting two third downs to get into UIndy territory. On a first down play, the Hawks pulled out a halfback pass play and Poindexter was interfered with on James's heave down the middle of the field. That set up the Hawks at the 31-yard line.

On the next play, James rushed for 15 yards, followed by a 12-yard gain by Harris. Three plays later, Kelley found redshirt-junior tight end Owen Schoenenberger (Evansville, Wis.) on a four-yard touchdown pass to stretch the lead to 27-13.

After the defense came up with another stop, James broke free on a 41-yard touchdown run to seal the win with 1:06 to play.

The 'Hounds outgained the Hawks, 467-374, but Quincy's running game was the difference. The Hawks chewed up 273 yards on the ground while holding UIndy to just 71 rushing yards.

James went over the 100-yard mark for the fourth time this season, rushing for 112 yards on 15 carries. He scored two touchdowns. Harris added 95 yards on 16 rushes and redshirt-freshman Dominique Bobo (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade/Valparaiso) tacked on 66 yards on 12 carries.

Kelley went 10-for-23 through the air for 101 yards and two touchdowns. Poindexter was the top target, catching four passes for 63 yards.

Stancombe, making his first collegiate start, went 22-for-42 for 396 yards and two touchdowns. Three UIndy receivers went over the 100-yard mark, led by Payton, who caught six passes for 182 yards and a touchdown. Walker led the Greyhounds with 48 yards on 11 carries.

Sophomore safety Shane Barrett (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) led the Hawks with nine tackles, while redshirt-senior cornerback Jasus Harkins (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and redshirt-junior linebacker Nate Rueckemann (McHenry, Ill.) had seven stops each. Redshirt-sophomore linebacker T.J. Daniels (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) had five tackles, two for loss, and a sack.

Quincy converted 9-of-18 third downs and held Indianapolis to 3-for-13. QU had a 15-minute advantage in time of possession.

The Hawks exit conference play next Saturday (Hawktober 22) when they travel to Davenport (Mich.) for an 11 a.m. CT kickoff.
