#19 Lady Hawks Earn 70-54 Win Over McKendree

QUINCY, Ill. – The 19th-ranked Quincy University women's basketball team turned in a solid defensive effort and outscored McKendree in every quarter on its way to a 70-54 win over McKendree on Saturday (Jan. 9) afternoon at Pepsi Arena.
Ā
The Lady Hawks (13-1, 4-1 GLVC) have now won five in a row and remain tied atop the GLVC West standings with Truman. Drury (3-1) plays UW-Parkside on Saturday evening.
Ā
Quincy fell behind early, 10-8, after senior guardĀ Maggie Cunningham (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods)Ā picked up her second foul with 5:45 remaining in the first quarter. The Bearcats (6-9, 1-4 GLVC) would eventually go up by four, 12-8, before Quincy reeled off the next eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers from sophomore forwardĀ Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.)Ā and sophomore guardĀ Megan Wienstroer (Okawville, Ill.).
Ā
With Cunningham limited to just eight minutes in the game due to foul trouble, junior reserveĀ Selina Barnes (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sierra/Southeastern CC)Ā filled in admirably. She contributed five rebounds and two assists with no turnovers in 20 minutes off the bench.
Ā
The Lady Hawks extended their lead to as many as 12 points late in the second quarter and took a 37-29 lead into halftime.
Ā
Quincy did a nice job early of establishing the paint as senior centerĀ Erin Mennemeyer (Old Monroe, Mo./Troy Buchanan)Ā scored eight points and collected four rebounds in 12 minutes in the first half. She finished with 14 points.
Ā
Mennemeyer's bucket to start the second half pushed the lead to 10 and it never got under that the rest of the way.
Ā
Quincy was solid on the offensive glass, turning 14 offensive rebounds into 13 second chance points. The Lady Hawks out-rebounded the Bearcats, 39-32, overall. That helped them overcome a 39.3 percent (22-for-56) shooting mark for the game.
Ā
Webster led the Lady Hawks with 15 points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. Wienstroer added 11 points as the third QU player in double figures.
Ā
Kacey Johnson's 18 points led the Bearcats, who shot 42.9 percent (24-for-56) from the field. The Lady Hawks did not allow McKendree to hit a 3-point basket (0-for-7).
Ā
The Lady Hawks will now hit the road for a pair of games at Southern Indiana and Bellarmine,w which have a combined record of 20-2. QU and USI tip-off at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 14).
