#19 Lady Hawks Stifle USI in Evansville

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 19 Quincy University women's basketball team dominated a marquee matchup against the University of Southern Indiana on Thursday night (Jan. 14) with a 78-65 win in Evansville, Ind. QU knocked down 14 3-point field goals hitting 61% from deep. The Lady Hawks held USI to scoreless from beyond the arc on six attempts. This is the second consecutive game that QU held an opponent without a 3-point field goal (vs. McKendree, Jan. 9). The Screaming Eagles turned the ball over 21 times in the game.

The No. 19 Lady Hawks (14-1, 5-1 GLVC) knocked down their most triples in a game since Nov. 14, 2015 against Northern Michigan in the first game of the season. Nikia Edom and Maggie Cunningham were both 5-of-7 from three.

The Screaming Eagles (10-3, 3-2 GLVC) took their only lead at the six minute and 32 second mark after Hannah Wascher scored three straight baskets to jump ahead 6-5. 

The Lady Hawks took a 26-18 lead at the end of the first quarter through a well balanced attack on offense.

QU expanded their lead to 44-33 by halftime thanks in part to two treys at the end of the second quarter from Maggie Cunningham. Cunningham led the way with 11 points at the half for QU. Kara Gerbus scored nine points in the first period.

Gerbus took over to start the second half. The senior forward knocked down a three to start the half and went on a stretch of nine straight points for QU to push the lead to 53-37. Cunningham drilled a three on the next possession.

The Screaming Eagles' leading scorer, Hannah Wascher, found herself in foul trouble picking up her third foul 10 seconds into the second half.  Wascher led the Screaming Eagles despite the foul trouble with 24 points and eight rebounds. 

QU led 68-50 at the end of the third quarter. USI sparked a 10-point run in the fourth quarter, but could only climb back to a 71-60 deficit.

QU finished with a 78-65 win led by Kara Gerbus and Maggie Cunningham with 18 points. Nikia Edom added 15 points all from 3-point range. 

The Lady Hawks shot 47% from the field and grabbed 10 offensive rebounds to convert 10 second chance points. QU and USI both gathered 27 rebounds. QU had 18 assists with Maggie Cunningham and Carly Beebe leading the way with six assists each. 

Mikayla Rowan was the only other Screaming Eagle in double-digits with 15 points off the bench.

QU has yet to allow an opponent to score 70 points or more through 15 games this season.

The 19th-ranked Lady Hawks travel to Louisville, Ky. to face undefeated Bellarmine University on Saturday (Jan. 16). Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
