Hawks Dominate First Half, Rout McKendree 95-76

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team used a 34-13 run over a 13-minute between the first and second halves to soundly defeat McKendree, 95-76, on Saturday (Jan. 9) afternoon at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (10-4, 4-1 GLVC) have now won five straight games and 10 of their last 11. They are tied atop the GLVC West standings with Truman. Drury (3-1) plays UW-Parkside later on Saturday.

McKendree (7-5, 0-4 GLVC) stayed close with Quincy early in the first half as both offenses traded baskets.

The Hawks took a 24-19 lead with just over 12 minutes left in the first half after junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) found senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) streaking down the floor and hit him with a 40-foot lob pass and Eneogwe flushed it with two hands as John Murphy fouled him.

That three-point play ignited the Hawks' bench as senior guards Jordan Wilson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) and Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) knocked down 3-pointers.

Quincy still only led 33-30 with 7:39 left in the half. That's when the Hawks dug in defensively. They allowed the Bearcats to shoot just 2-for-11 with four turnovers for the remainder of the half as Quincy turned their three-point lead into a 55-36 advantage at the intermission.

The Hawks dominated the paint in the first half, 32-12, and out-rebounded the visitors, 26-18. Junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) nearly posted a double-double in the first 20 minutes with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Hawks continued rolling in the second half, going up by as many as 35 points after a Wilson 3-pointer with 9:36 remaining.

Five players scored in double figures, led by Tagarelli, who finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) recorded his second straight double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Eneogwe shot 8-for-12 from the floor for a season-high 19 points. He also blocked two shots.

Wilson and junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) each scored 12 points.

The Hawks owned the glass, 48-35, and led on points in the paint, 58-32. David Franklin led the Bearcats with 19 points.

The Hawks take their winning streak on the road next week, playing at Southern Indiana on Thursday (Jan. 14) at 7:30 p.m.
