Hawks Pull Out Gutsy Road Win at USI, 96-92

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team took their first lead of the second half with 50 seconds remaining and then held on for a gutsy 96-92 road win at Southern Indiana on Thursday (Jan. 14) night in Evansville.

The Hawks (11-4, 5-1 GLVC) have now won six straight for the first time since the 2010-11 season and are winners of 11 of their last 12 games overall. Quincy also owns sole possession of first place in the GLVC West.

Quincy trailed by 10 points after a bucket by George Edwards stretched USI's lead to 85-75 with 7:24 to play.

Until this point it seemed every time the Hawks would draw within a basket, the Screaming Eagles (12-3, 4-1 GLVC) would go on a mini-run to extend the lead. This time, the defense strapped in. QU forced the Screaming Eagles to shoot 1-for-9 from the field with three turnovers in the final seven minutes of the game.

Quincy got back-to-back baskets by junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) to cut the lead to six points. After a third straight defensive stop, which had been elusive all night, senior guard Jordan Wilson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) stepped into a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 85-82 with 4:43 left.

The teams then traded free throws before T.J. Tisdell's layup gave USI an 89-84 lead. Junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) then drained a 3-pointer to cut it to a two-point game with two minutes left.

USI's Alex Stein sank two free throws and senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) drilled a triple with 1:11 left to cut it to 91-90. Des Jardins scored 13 of his career-high 18 points in the second half.

Senor ripped the ball from Jeril Taylor on a dribble handoff on the ensuing possession and flipped in the fastbreak layup to give QU its first lead of the half, 92-91 with 50 seconds left.

The QU defense, which struggled until the final minutes, forced a stop and junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) sank two free throws with 29 seconds remaining.

Stein then bolted down the lane and drew a foul before splitting a pair at the line. The Eagles sent Washington back to the line and the Hawks' wing missed the front end of a one-and-bonus to give USI a chance to take a lead. Bobo Drummond's deep 3-pointer missed and Washington collected the rebound. This time he was sure-handed at the stripe and iced the game with 7.1 seconds left by knocking down both free throws.

The game was played at a wild pace with both teams trading baskets both inside and outside with little defensive resistance. The Screaming Eagles led the Hawks at halftime, 53-48.

The Hawks made up for a 21-13 deficit in rebounding in the first half by knocking down 3-pointers. They went 8-for-19 from the 3-point line in the first 20 minutes, getting five triples from senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central). He scored 19 of his career-best 25 points in the first half and finished with seven threes. It was the most 3-pointers in a game by a QU player since Tyler Burke hit seven against UW-Parkside on Feb. 15, 2010.

Junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) scored 16 points and McGaughey and Washington added 10 each. McGaughey led the Hawks with nine rebounds. Senor finished with nine points, seven assists and just one turnover in 32 minutes. Wilson added eight points on 3-for-3 shooting with three assists.

The Hawks shot 52.9 percent (37-for-70) from the field and went 15-for-35 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range. They recorded 22 assists and committed just nine turnovers.

Drummond led the Screaming Eagles with 25 points, but the Hawks limited him to just three in the second half. He sank six triples. Jeril Taylor chipped in 20 points. The Eagles shot 51.6 percent (33-for-64) from the field and owned a 38-33 edge in rebounding.

The Hawks will look for a weekend sweep of the top of the GLVC East on Saturday (Jan. 16) when they take on No. 9 Bellarmine at 2:15 p.m. CT in Louisville, Ky.
