#9 Bellarmine Squeaks By Hawks in Final Minute, 81-79

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team came up just short in its upset bid, falling to No. 9 Bellarmine, 81-79, at Knights Hall in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday (Jan. 16) afternoon in a battle between GLVC division leaders.

The loss stops Quincy's winning streak at six games as the Hawks (11-5, 5-2 GLVC) are in a tie with Drury for first place atop the GLVC West standings.

The second half of Saturday's game featured 11 lead changes and four tie scores as the teams traded blows until the final minute. The Hawks were coming off an emotional 96-92 win at Southern Indiana two days prior in which they rallied in the final minute for the win.

The game was stuck on the score 67-62 with the Knights leading for more than two minutes until senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) sank a 3-pointer with 5:10 to play. George Suggs answered that with his own triple before Eneogwe stepped back for another trey to cut the deficit to two.

The Hawks trailed by five, 73-68, with four minutes left after Rusty Troutman responded to Eneogwe's second three with a 3-pointer for the Knights (13-2, 6-0 GLVC), who have now won 10 straight games.

Junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) then converted a layup off a feed from Eneogwe, and then got a steal on the defensive end before Eneogwe hit a couple free throws to cut it to 73-72 with 2:49 left.

Tagarelli then answered a Yasin Kolo jumper with a basket of his own, but Troutman's free throws made it a three-point game again.

Eneogwe then stepped into a 3-pointer that tied the game at 77-77 as QU overcame a lead as large as eight in the second half. Tagarelli then forced a turnover on the other end and junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) followed up a missed shot with a tip-in with a minute to go that gave Quincy a 79-77 lead.

George Suggs, one of the GLVC's most lethal 3-point threats then got a pass from Michael Parrish and nailed a 3-pointer to give the hosts an 80-79 lead with 49 seconds left.

The Hawks then committed an offensive foul on the ensuing possession, but McGaughey came up with a steal on BU's next trip as they tried to run the clock down. Eneogwe raced up the floor and was fouled with seven seconds remaining. The senior missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity and QU sent Parrish to the line.

The Knights' leading free throw shooter hit the first attempt, but missed on the second. McGaughey sent an outlet pass ahead for junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast), who had his midcourt shot hit off the back iron at the buzzer.

The game was tightly contested throughout as neither team ever held a double-digit lead. Quincy led by four in the final minute of the first half, but the Knights closed with a quick run and the teams went into halftime tied at 40-40.

The Hawks battled foul trouble all game as the Knights outscored Quincy, 20-5, at the foul line. Eneogwe sat for nearly 10 minutes in the second half with four fouls. Seven QU players finished with at least three fouls.

Eneogwe paced the Hawks with 19 points, going 5-for-11 from the 3-point line. He hit 12 threes on the weekend with just seven on the season. He also collected five rebounds and blocked three shots.

Tagarelli had 14 points, five rebounds and four steals while Senor scored 13 points and matched a career-high with nine assists. He committed just one turnover in 37 minutes. In the last three games since becoming the Hawks' starting point guard after Thomas Jackson's (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) injury, Senor is averaging eight assists and one turnover per game.

Senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) chipped in 11 points off the bench and McGaughey was the fifth QU player in double figures with 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Troutman finished with a double-double for Bellarmine with 23 points and 10 rebounds. The Knights shot 52.9 percent (27-for-51) from the field and went 20-for-27 from the free throw line. The Knights won the glass, 39-36.

The Hawks return to Pepsi Arena on Thursday (Jan. 21) when they play host to Maryville at 7:30 p.m.
