Efficient Hawks Go Wire-To-Wire In 98-79 Win Over Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team bounced back from its first loss in over a month with a comprehensive 98-79 win over Maryville in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday (Jan. 21) night at Pepsi Arena. The Hawks never trailed in the game.

Quincy (12-5, 6-2 GLVC) remains tied with Drury atop the GLVC West standings. The Hawks, coming off a tough 81-79 defeat at No. 9 Bellarmine last Saturday, have won 12 of their last 14 games.

The strong play started with the Hawks' two biggest players as junior forwards Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) and Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) each scored 25 points while combining to shoot 21-for-29 from the field. Both players nearly had double-doubles – McGaughey collected nine rebounds and Tagarelli grabbed eight, including six on the offensive glass.

The Hawks dominated the paint, outscoring the Saints, 52-34, and on second chance opportunities, 23-5. QU pulled down 15 offensive rebounds.

Quincy was extremely efficient offensively with 96 of their 98 points coming from the paint, 3-point range or the free throw line.

Tagarelli got the Hawks going by scoring the first eight points to give QU an 8-6 lead going into the first media timeout.

The Hawks got going from 3-point range a few minutes later as junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) and senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) hit consecutive shots from long range to push QU's lead to 24-17 with 10 minutes left in the first half.

Quincy did not get separation from the Saints (7-11, 1-7 GLVC) until the final four minutes of the first half when QU closed the stanza with a 13-1 run to take a 49-34 lead into the intermission. McGaughey had six points in that stretch and senior guard Jordan Wilson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) closed the half with a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded off a quick dish from junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast).

The Saints cut the lead to 59-51 early in the second half as the Hawks lacked a bit of energy coming out of the locker room. QU turned it around on a Tagarelli bucket, followed by back-to-back defensive stops and a 3-pointer by sophomore wing Bobby Frasco (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect/Buffalo). That stretch started a 10-0 run that pushed the Hawks' lead to 69-51 with 10:49 remaining.

Wilson then scored the Hawks' next nine points by draining three 3-pointers in a two-minute span to push the game out of reach as the Hawks led 78-58 with 7:54 to go. Wilson finished with a season-high 17 points to go with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. He was 6-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the 3-point line.

Washington was the fourth QU player in double figures with 15 points and three rebounds. Senor continued his impressive string at the point guard spot with seven points, six assists, three rebounds and just two turnovers.

As a team, the Hawks forced 22 Maryville turnovers and turned them into 30 points. QU led in transition points, 13-2, and points off the bench, 26-18.

The Hawks shot 49.3 percent (37-for-75) from the field and 35.7 percent (10-for-28) from 3-point range. Maryville shot 53.8 percent (28-for-52) from the field, but attempted 23 fewer field goals. Forrester Sims paced the Saints with 23 points, while Karson King chipped in a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.

The Hawks return to the floor on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. when they take on Missouri-St. Louis (6-11, 0-8 GLVC) at Pepsi Arena. The Tritons are coming off a 67-62 defeat at Truman on Thursday. Their last three games have been decided by five or fewer points.
