Hawks Move into First Place, Escape UMSL in OT, 94-92

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team saw Missouri-St. Louis erase a 16-point second half lead, but the Hawks pulled out a 94-92 overtime win over the Tritons in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday (Jan. 23) afternoon.

The Hawks (13-5, 7-2 GLVC) pulled into sole possession of the GLVC West lead following Drury's loss to William Jewell. Quincy is one game ahead of Truman and Drury in the standings. The Hawks and Panthers square off on Thursday (Jan. 28) in Springfield, Mo.

On Saturday, the Hawks had a 16-point advantage with 8:30 to play in regulation and held a 10-point lead, 76-66, with two minutes left, but could not hold on against a gritty UMSL team seeking its first league win. The Tritons (6-12, 0-9 GLVC) have lost their last four games by five points or fewer.

Brandon Marquardt's 30-foot 3-pointer off an offensive rebound with 30 seconds left in the second half cut Quincy's lead to 76-72. Quincy then missed the front end of a one-and-one to keep it a four-point game.

Tre Ogles then hit just one of three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point shot, but UMSL got the offensive rebound on the last miss. Drew Skaggs followed up a Marquardt missed three with a tip-in to trim the lead to 76-75.

The Tritons fouled on the next possession and senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) hit the first of two free throws, but missed the second.

UMSL's DeAndre Holmes lined up a 3-pointer to win the game, but the Hawks committed a foul on the shot, their second foul on a triple attempt in the last seven seconds of regulation. Holmes missed the middle of the three freebies and sent the game to overtime. The Tritons shot just 19-for-36 (52.8 percent) from the free throw line.

The Tritons hit the first bucket of the overtime period, but senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) hit two free throws to even the score. QU then got a stop and junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) hit a short jumper to give the Hawks an 81-79 lead.

The Tritons answered with a bucket to tie it again. Senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) split a pair of free throws, but Eneogwe cleaned up the glass on the second one to put the Hawks ahead 84-81.

UMSL never tied the game after that point. The visitors shot 5-for-8 from the line in the overtime period while the Hawks went 11-for-12. UMSL also missed all six of their 3-point shots in the overtime.

The Hawks led almost the entire way and got solid offensive performances all the way around, despite leading scorer Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) coming off the bench due to illness. He was limited to eight points in 16 minutes.

Eneogwe and junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) paced the Hawks with 18 points apiece. McGaughey chipped in a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Senor just missed his first career double-double with 14 points, nine assists, five rebounds and three steals. Senior Jordan Wilson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) was the fifth QU player in double figures with 10 points.

The Hawks shot 41.3 percent (31-for-75) from the field, but were limited to a 25.7 percent (9-for-35) mark from the 3-point line. UMSL shot 46.5 percent (33-for-71) from the field. The Tritons won the battle on the glass, 48-46. Hunter Reine paced the Tritons with 21 points and 15 rebounds.

The Hawks open a four-game road swing on Thursday (Jan. 28) when they take on Drury (11-6, 6-3 GLVC) in Springfield, Mo. Tip-off is set for 7:45 p.m.
