Drury Holds Off Hawks in Final Minute, 79-76

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team dropped a tight game as Drury escaped the Hawks, 79-76, in the final minute at the O'Reilly Family Event Center in Springfield, Mo. on Thursday (Jan. 29) night.

The Hawks (13-6, 7-3 GLVC) are now tied with the Panthers  (and Truman State atop the GLVC West standings. QU now heads to Missouri S&T on Saturday (Jan. 31).

Thursday's game featured six tie scores and 19 lead changes as the teams traded blows all night.

The final lead change came in the final minute. Quincy, which used an 11-0 run to regain a second-half lead, had a 76-75 lead after a pair of free throws by junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) with 1:05 remaining. Tevin Foster then sank a pair at the line on Tagarelli's fifth foul with 53 seconds left to give the Panthers a 77-76 lead.

QU then got the ball into its point guard's hands as junior Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) got into the lane, but had his runner blocked by Douglas Moore.

The Hawks then fouled as the Panthers whittled the clock down to 11 seconds and Foster drained two more free throws to take a 79-76 lead.

Senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) created space at the top of the key on the Hawks' next possession and got a good look from long range, but his 3-point try front-rimmed and the put-back in traffic by junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) came off the rim as time expired.

The Hawks trailed by 10 points, 67-57, with 7:48 to play in the game. Washington then hit a needed 3-pointer on an inside-out pass from junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West). QU then forced three straight Drury turnovers and Washington scored on a transition layup and McGaughey rammed a one-handed slam off a steal by Washington to cut the deficit to 67-64.

After a McGaughey blocked shot, Tagarelli cut the deficit to one, 67-66, with a layup off a nifty entry pass by Senor. Tagarelli's bucket on a second-chance opportunity on QU's next possession gave the Hawks a 68-67 lead.

Drury's Joshua Palmer stopped the run with a 3-pointer before Washington answered with his own triple that gave QU a 73-72 lead with 3:29 remaining. That would be the final field goal by either team the rest of the way as the Panthers took the final lead of the game in the final minute.

Tagarelli paced the Hawks with 24 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. McGaughey added 15 points, four boards and three blocks. Washington scored 13 points to go with seven rebounds.

The Hawks shot 43.5 percent (26-for-62) from the field, including a 37.5 percent (9-for-24) mark from 3-point range. Meanwhile, the Panthers hit at a 45.6 percent (26-for-57) clip and shot 50 percent (9-for-18) from beyond the arc. The Hawks held a slight 36-35 edge on the glass.

Kameron Bundy led four Panthers in double figures with 19 points, six assists and five rebounds.

The Hawks will look for a weekend split on Saturday (Jan. 31) when they take on Missouri S&T (8-11, 4-6 GLVC) in Rolla, Mo. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
