Hawks Light Up Scoreboard, Defeat S&T, 109-96

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a high-scoring affair at Missouri S&T, 109-96, in Rolla, Mo. on Saturday (Jan. 30) afternoon. The win gave the Hawks a road split in Great Lakes Valley Conference action this weekend after falling to Drury on Thursday.

The 109 points are the most for the Hawks against a GLVC opponent since a 125-118 triple-overtime win over Southern Indiana in the NCAA Tournament on March 7, 1997. The last time QU scored at least 109 points in a GLVC regulation regular season game was March 2, 1996 in a 116-93 win over Saint Joseph's.

The Hawks (14-6, 8-3 GLVC) are now tied with Truman atop the GLVC West standings. The Bulldogs came away with a road win at Drury on Saturday to improve to 8-3 in league play. The Panthers sit a game back at 7-4.

Senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) and junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) each reached career highs in points.

Eneogwe scored 11 points in the game's first two minutes, 20 seconds, on his way to 32 points in just 25 minutes. He finished 12-for-16 from the field and 6-for-8 from 3-point range. Senor scored 19 of his 29 points in the second half and also dished out eight assists.

Eneogwe set the tone of Saturday's game in the opening minutes. He knocked down a triple on the opening possession and then got a steal on the defensive end that led to a layin by junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan). Eneogwe then hit a pair of threes on the next two possessions and sank a couple free throws to stretch Quincy's lead to 13-2. Senor's 3-pointer with 17:13 remaining in the half capped a 16-2 run to open the game.

The Miners (8-12, 4-7 GLVC) briefly got back in the game, cutting the lead to 26-20 with 11:34 left in the first half on a 3-pointer by Danylo Zuikov.

Quincy then went on another extended run, a 10-1 spurt led by Eneogwe and junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West), who each had four points in the run. McGaughey finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds for his fifth double-double in the last 10 games.

Enegowe's 3-pointer to close the first half gave him 21 points for the game and stretched Quincy's lead to 54-36 at halftime.

In the second half, the Hawks led by as many as 27 points before the Miners were able to fight the lead down to 10 points. QU kept the Miners at bay in the final minutes by draining their last eight free throw attempts.

The Hawks shot 60.9 percent (39-for-64) from the field and 48 percent (12-for-25) from 3-point distance. QU also went 19-for-27 (70.4 percent) from the line. The only major win for the Miners came in the free throw category as the hosts made 40 of their 44 free throw attempts.

Quincy held the Miners to 38.1 percent (24-for-63) shooting from the field. QU also held a 58-24 edge on points in the paint. Washington was the fourth Quincy player in double figures with 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting.

Desmond Buerge led the Miners with 26 points and seven rebounds. S&T got 40 points from its reserves, led by Zach Ellis' 17.

The Hawks continue their four-game GLVC road trip on Thursday (Feb. 4) at 6:45 p.m. CT when they travel to Indinaapolis to take on the Greyhounds.
