#19 Lady Hawks Hold Off UIS 75-66 To Win 4th Straight

QUINCY, Ill. – The 19th-ranked Quincy University women's basketball team staved off a pesky Illinois Springfield on Thursday (Jan. 7) night to come away with a 75-66 win in the return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Pepsi Arena.

The Lady Hawks (12-1, 3-1 GLVC) have now won four straight games and are in a three-way tie atop the GLVC West standings with Drury and Truman after the Panthers were defeated by Lewis on Thursday.

The Lady Hawks looked strong early in the game, scoring the first nine points and keeping the Prairie Stars (5-6, 0-4 GLVC) off the board for the first three-and-a-half minutes. QU forced five turnovers and three missed shots in that stretch.

The visitors chipped away with a 6-1 run to close the first quarter to trail 16-12. Quincy stretched lead to six in the second quarter, but the Stars cut the lead to 32-29 by halftime.

The game remained tight in the third quarter as Quincy led by as many as six again, 39-33, but could not deliver a game-controlling run as an 8-2 burst by the Prairie Stars tied the game at 41-41.

UIS took its first lead of the game with 9:18 remaining and led by one point on three separate occasions, but each time the Lady Hawks came back with points of their own. Senior Kara Gerbus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin) hit a layup off a pass from sophomore Megan Wienstroer (Okawville, Ill.) to give the Lady Hawks the lead for good with 7:28 to play.

Senior guard Maggie Cunningham (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods), who finished with a game-high 23 points, scored five straight for the Lady Hawks before Wienstroer's layup gave QU a 64-56 lead with 6:05 left.

The Lady Hawks iced the game by going 7-for-8 from the line in the final minute.

Cunningham had six rebounds, five assists and three steals to go with her 23 points. Sophomore Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) finished with 16 points and nine rebounds while Gerbus and senior center Erin Mennemeyer (Old Monroe, Mo./Troy Buchanan) added 10 points apiece.

The Prairie Stars shot 51 percent (26-for-51) from the field in the game, while QU hit just 43.9 percent (25-for-57) of its shots. The Lady Hawks forced 23 turnovers, but committed 21 themselves.

The difference came in the rebounding category as Quincy dominated the boards, 41-21, and finished with 18 offensive rebounds. QU led on second chance points, 16-4.

The Lady Hawks will return to the floor on Saturday (Jan. 9) when they play host to McKendree in inter-divisional GLVC play. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
