#18 Quincy Extends Streak to Nine with OT Win over UMSL

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 18 Quincy University women's basketball team battled through a tough game in Pepsi Arena against the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday (Jan. 23) to earn an overtime win and extend their winning streak to nine games. Kara Gerbus and Carly Beebe combined for 50 points for QU to notch the 81-77 win.

UMSL (7-10, 2-7 GLVC) took the lead with 52 seconds left on a Shea O'Brien three in the fourth quarter. O'Brien split a pair of free throws to give the Tritons a 68-66 lead with five seconds left.

The Lady Hawks (17-1, 8-1 GLVC) drove the lane looking to go to the line. Maggie Cunningham missed a contested layup, but Kara Gerbus got the rebound and was fouled with four-tenths of a second remaining in the game. After an official timeout to look at the replay, Gerbus hit both free throws, nothing-but-net, to send the game into overtime and give the Lady Hawks new life.

Kara Gerbus and Carly Beebe both converted big triples in the extra period to give the Lady Hawks the edge. Gerbus and Beebe combined for 12 of the 13 points in overtime for QU. Gerbus found herself back at the line with two seconds to play in the overtime. This time she had a two point lead and drained both to put the game out of reach.

Gerbus finished with 26 points, going 8-of-8 from the line, and grabbing nine rebounds. Eight of her rebounds were on the offensive glass. QU finished with 19 offensive boards and converted 20 second chance points.

Beebe scored the first 11 points of the game for the Lady Hawks and was on fire from downtown. The senior guard scored 24 points and went 5-of-5 from three-point land.

Maggie Cunningham finished the game with her first career double-double. Cunningham scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The senior guard was two assists away from a triple-double.

Nikia Edom hit two three's in the fourth quarter that held UMSL in check. Edom finished with six points.

Anika Webster was the only other Lady Hawk to score. She had 14 points off the bench including seven made free throws.

QU shot 37% from the field, but their average was elevated to 48% from behind the three-point arc. The Lady Hawks also made 19-of-24 from the line.

UMSL had 24 turnovers that QU converted to 22 points. The Tritons shot 57% from the field and 44% from three, but hit 68% from the line.

The Tritons were led by Kelly Kunkel with 17 points. Shea O'Brien scored 16 points off the bench. Amber Daly finished with 11 points for UMSL.
