#18 Lady Hawks Win Eighth Straight, Defeat Maryville 87-71

QUINCY, Ill. – The 18th-ranked Quincy University women's basketball team led wire-to-wire as the Lady Hawks won their eighth straight game, defeating Maryville, 87-71, on Thursday (Jan. 21) night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Pepsi Arena.
 
The Lady Hawks (16-1, 7-1 GLVC) maintained their one-game advantage over Truman and Drury in the GLVC West standings heading into Saturday's game against Missouri-St. Louis.
 
Quincy scored eight of the first 10 points of the game with junior guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) knocking down a pair of 3-pointers off drive-and-kick opportunities.
 
The Lady Hawks opened it up to 22-10 before the Saints (8-7, 2-6 GLVC) used a 10-0 run to trim the advantage down to 22-20. Quincy quickly responded with a 13-2 run as Edom, senior guard Carly Beebe (Vermont, Ill./South Fulton) and senior forward Kara Gerbus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin) each buried 3-pointers.
 
Quincy, which came into the game ranked second in the country in 3-point percentage, went 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) from long distance in the game.
 
Senior guard Maggie Cunningham (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) converted a coast-to-coast layup as the buzzer sounded to give the Lady Hawks a 43-32 lead at halftime. Cunningham finished with 22 points, six rebounds and six assists while shooting 8-for-10 from the field.
 
The Saints cut the deficit to as little as eight on two separate occasions in the third quarter, but the Lady Hawks closed the quarter on an 11-4 spurt, capped by a Cunningham 3-pointer, to take a 68-53 lead.
 
Quincy's lead grew to as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Hawks were able to cruise in the final 10 minutes.
 
Edom finished with 19 points and matched a career-high with six 3-pointers. Senior center Erin Mennemeyer (Old Monroe, Mo./Troy Buchanan) added 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks as the third player to score in double figures.
 
The Lady Hawks shot 50.9 percent (27-for-53) from the field and dished out 17 assists on 27 made field goals.
 
Alex Hillyer paced the Saints with a game-high 29 points on 12-for-21 shooting from the field. The Lady Hawks held Maryville to 44.4 percent (28-for-63) shooting.
 
The Lady Hawks will return to the Pepsi Arena floor on Saturday (Jan. 23) when they play host to Missouri-St. Louis (7-9, 2-6 GLVC) at 1 p.m. The Tritons lost to Truman, 78-73, in overtime on Thursday in Kirksville, Mo.
