QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 23 Quincy University women's basketball team played their first game of 2016 on Saturday (Jan. 2) earning a win over Missouri Valley College 71-46. QU had 15 steals and forced 26 turnovers in the contest. MVC scored 30 of their 46 points in the paint.

With four minutes to play in the first quarter, Megan Wienstroer came off the bench to drain three of four from beyond the arc leading the Lady Hawks to a 26-18 lead at half. Wienstroer's triples were the only made baskets by QU in the final four minutes of the first period.

The Vikings scored the first four points of the second quarter, but turnovers haunted them in the second period. QU scored eight points off turnovers in the second quarter and netted 27 points off turnovers for the game.

With a lead of 40-27 at halftime, Kara Gerbus hit a three to extend the lead to 16 points to start the second half. Wienstroer entered the game again to hit two triples in the final five minutes of the third quarter. Sarah Schumacher hit a jumper in the paint with eight seconds left to send the Lady Hawks to the fourth quarter with a 55-36 lead.

In the final five minutes of the fourth quarter, Makinze Roman netted six points and Cierra Young hit a three helping the Lady Hawks to a 71-46 win.

Megan Wienstroer led the Lady Hawks with 17 points on five 3-pointers. The Lady Hawks shot 47.5% from the field. Erin Mennemeyer netted 10 points for QU. The Vikings grabbed 32 rebounds to Quincy's 31, but the Lady Hawks scored 12 second chance points while holding MVC to three.
