Hawks Tripped Up at Southwest Baptist

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team led Southwest Baptist, 26-21, in the second quarter before an offensive barrage by the Bearcats sent the home team past the Hawks, 56-33, on Saturday (Sept. 26) afternoon in Bolivar, Mo.

The Bearcats (2-2, 1-1 GLVC) outscored the Hawks, 35-6, from the 3:50 mark of the second quarter to the 6:06 mark of the third quarter to take command of the game.

The Hawks (1-2, 1-1 GLVC) surrendered 614 total offensive yards, including 448 on the ground as Southwest Baptist owned the line of scrimmage. Sophomore running back Bubba Jenkins ran for a school-record 258 yards and five touchdowns to lead the SBU rushing attack. Nehemiah Gross had 124 yards on the ground and true freshman quarterback Trent Edwards rushed for 66 yards on 14 carries.

Offensively, the Hawks had no trouble moving the ball, picking up 447 total yards (averaging 8.0 yards per play). Redshirt-senior quarterback Nick Lonergan (Jacksonville, Ill.) threw for a career-high 384 yards and eclipsed the 7,000-yard mark for his career. He was 21-for-34 through the air with three touchdowns and an uncharacteristic three interceptions, including two by NCAA Division II leader Antion McBee who now has six on the season.

Sophomore tight end Owen Schoenenberger (Evansville, Wis.) was Lonergan's top target on the afternoon with five catches and a career-high 147 yards.

The Hawks were minus-4 in turnover margin as they also fumbled on a kickoff return that set up a Southwest Baptist touchdown to close the second quarter and send the Bearcats into halftime with a 35-26 lead.

The QU defense looked good early, forcing a punt and then a turnover on downs on the Bearcats' first two possessions.

The offense cashed in on a nine-play, 60-yard drive, capped by an eight-yard touchdown rush by true freshman Darius Burse (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) that gave Quincy a 7-0 lead.

The Bearcats quickly tied the game on a 14-yard touchdown run by Jenkins. A 58-yard pass from Lonergan to sophomore tight end Owen Schoenenberger (Evansville, Wis.) set up the Hawks in scoring position on the next drive before sophomore Chris Harris (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) carried it in from three yards out to give QU a 14-7 lead.

SBU answered with a 95-yard, 14-play drive that chewed up nearly six minutes off the clock and Jenkins went in from two yards for the score to tie the game at 14-14.

The Hawks then forced a three-and-out on the next possession and freshman linebacker Cody Leonard (Carrollton, Ill.) blocked the punt to set up Quincy at the 15-yard line. Two plays later Lonergan found senior fullback Greg Eilerman (Fenton, Mo./St. John Vianney) in the flat for a 10-yard touchdown. The Hawks had the extra point blocked.

From there, the rest of the half was a flurry. The Bearcats scored on a three-play, 61-yard drive before Lonergan connected with junior Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Monroe College) on a 71-yard scoring strike that pushed Quincy's lead to 26-21. The Hawks' two-point conversion failed.

Edwards went 3-for-3 on the next drive for SBU, scoring on a 57-yard pass to Scottie Wilson to give the hosts a 28-26 edge.

The Hawks fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Jenkins scored with 27 seconds left before halftime to give the Bearcats a 35-26 halftime lead.

On the first drive after the break, McBee picked off Lonergan, and two plays later, Jenkins sprinted 56 yards for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 42-26.

The Hawks were then forced to go three-and-out and SBU capitalized to take a 49-26 lead.

SBU forced Quincy into a fourth-down situation on the next series, but Lonergan hit sophomore Kody Wood (Jacksonville, Ill.) on a 50-yard touchdown pass behind the defense to cut the deficit back to two scores, 49-33.

That would be all for the Quincy offense, though, as the Bearcats scored on the opening play of the fourth quarter for the final margin.

For the second time in three games, the Hawks failed to get their running game going. They picked up just 63 yards on the ground, averaging 2.9 yards per carry. Burse led the rushing attack with 27 yards on seven carries.

Wood finished with three catches for 92 yards and a touchdown. Poindexter also caught three passes for 89 yards and a score.

Redshirt-freshman linebacker T.J. Daniels (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) with 14 tackles, including a half-sack. Sophomore linebacker Nate Rueckemann (McHenry, Ill.) had 11 stops and junior defensive tackle Darius Carey (Florissant, Mo./CBC) made 10 tackles, including 1.5 sacks.

Both teams were hampered by penalties. The Hawks committed 12 infractions for 89 yards while SBU had 13 penalties for 132 yards. The Hawks were 2-for-9 on third downs, while Bearcats picked up 6-of-12 third downs.

The Hawks will return to the field next Saturday (Oct. 3) when they take on Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m. at QU Stadium in Quincy's Homecoming game.
