Final Stand Seals 18-16 Homecoming Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University defense got a crucial stop on a two-point conversion with 47 seconds remaining to seal an 18-16 win over Saint Joseph's on Homecoming at QU Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 3) afternoon.

Following a two-yard touchdown by SJC quarterback Wade Burtron, the two-point conversion pass to Jose Esquevil was complete at the goal line, but freshman cornerback Chris Parker (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) stood up the Pumas' receiver just shy of the line to keep Quincy's two-point lead intact.

The Hawks (2-2, 2-1 GLVC) would see the onside kick attempt go out-of-bounds before they were able to run out the remaining time on the clock to remain undefeated on their new home turf in front of 3,117 fans on Homecoming.

Alumni, family, friends and fans were treated to an excellent ballgame that saw the momentum sway back-and-forth between the teams.

The Pumas (2-3, 1-2 GLVC) got on the board first, converting third downs of 24 and 17 yards during an 11-play, 57-yard opening drive. Gavin Voss drilled a 21-yard field goal after Parker stopped Esquivel on the 3-yard line on third-and-goal.

The Hawks struggled to get the offense going in the first quarter, mustering just 66 yards on 15 plays. They got inside the red zone early in the second quarter, but were turned away on downs at the SJC 20-yard line.

Burtron, a dual-threat signal caller for Saint Joseph's guided a 75-yard, 14-play drive in the second quarter, but freshman linebacker Chymasie Bighems (Bartow, Fla./Fort Meade) thwarted the march with an interception on the 1-yard line that he returned to the Quincy 24.

The Hawks followed with an eight-play, 76-yard drive, capped by a gorgeous 20-yard pass over the middle from fifth-year senior quarterback Nick Lonergan (Jacksonville, Ill.) to junior Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick).

The Hawks, who missed all three of their extra-point tries in the game, led 6-3 with 3:59 left in the second quarter.

After the Voss missed a 46-yard field goal with 1:02 left in the half, the Hawks cruised quickly down the field as Lonergan hit four different receivers, including Poindexter on a third-and-10 to get to the 11-yard line. After Lonergan's nine-yard scramble, sophomore Chris Harris (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) rumbled in from two yards out to give the Hawks a 12-3 lead.

The Pumas failed to field the ensuing kickoff, and freshman Devlyn Hogue (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South) fell on the ball at the SJC 38-yard line. Lonergan's 26-yard rush to the 12-yard line set up the Hawks for a 29-yard field goal to end the half, but it missed wide right.

The teams each traded multiple punts in the third quarter, which also featured an interception by sophomore cornerback Adehkeem Brown (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue), who made a great play on a deep ball by Burtron.

On the final play of the third quarter, Burtron finished a 15-play, 91-yard drive that took six minutes, 10 seconds off the clock with a one-yard dive. He ran the ball five times on the possession.

The QU offense was able to move the ball into SJC territory on its first drive of the fourth quarter, but was forced to punt. The defense responded by getting a stop at its own 40-yard line.

The Hawks drained four minutes, 29 seconds off the clock on their next possession, which ended with a 28-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline from Lonergan to Poindexter on a second-and-goal play following a personal foul penalty.

Trailing 18-10, the Pumas moved quickly down the field with 1:37 to play. a 31-yard pass from Burtron to E.J. Woody set the visitors up at the 2-yard line where the  quarterback called his own number to get within two points.

Burtron looked left on the conversion try and connected with Esquivel, who caught the ball with his back to the end zone. Parker stood him up right there to seal the win.

The Pumas out-gained the Hawks, 436-385, and converted 9-of-15 third downs.

Lonergan led the QU offense by going 20-for-28 for 228 yards and two touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. He also led the rushing attack with 76 yards on eight carries.

Poindexter caught nine passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns to lead the receiving corps.

Sophomore punter Mason Murray (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) punted five times for 170 yards, pinning the Pumas inside the 20-yard line four times.

Burtron ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing 18-for-28 for 262 yards. He was intercepted twice.

Junior defensive tackle Darius Carey (Florissant, Mo./CBC) wrapped up nine tackles to lead the defense. Wilky Orelien made 10 stops for the Pumas.

The Hawks will return to QU Stadium next Saturday (Oct. 10) when they take on William Jewell (1-4, 1-2 GLVC) at 1 p.m. The Cardinals defeated Missouri S&T on Saturday, 40-16.
