#3 Quincy Storms From 2-0 Down For 4-2 Win Over Lewis

QUINCY, Ill. – The third-ranked Quincy University women's soccer team overcame a 2-0 second-half deficit and stormed back for a 4-2 win over Lewis on Sunday (Sept. 20) afternoon at Legends Stadium.

It was the first time in head coach Dave Musso's 10-year career the Lady Hawks have come back from a 2-0 deficit to win.

The Lady Hawks (5-0-2, 2-0-2 GLVC) looked explosive from the opening kickoff as the front four generated plenty of opportunities, but couldn't get a goal. The trio of senior Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville), freshman Abby Pulliam (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka) and sophomore Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, Mo./St. Dominic) combined for 16 of Quincy's 20 shots in the game.

The Flyers (4-2-1, 2-1-1 GLVC) generated more possession as the first half wore on and were rewarded in the 42nd minute when the Lady Hawks couldn't clear a cross into the box and Elena Cukurs touched it across to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes after halftime, the Flyers doubled their lead in the 52nd minute as a communication miscue in the QU defense led to Maggie Moran getting a free run to the goal.

After that, the Lady Hawks switched into another offensive gear, changing into a more attacking formation to generate more opportunities.

Quincy got on the board in the 66th minute as a corner kick came free to Pulliam and her shot from the 18 was saved back into play by keeper Jennifer Meyer. The ball bounced straight to Burton, who drove a shot just inside the far post.

The Lady Hawks continued to apply pressure, and in the 72nd minute, won one of 12 corner kicks in the game. Junior Maddy Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) sent in the cross and sophomore Katie Heiligenstein (Wentzville, Mo./St. Dominic) headed it to the far post for Burton, who chested it down and touched it over the line for her second goal of the game and seventh of the year. They were the first assists of the season for Kuhlenberg and Heiligenstein.

The go-ahead goal came six minutes later when Pulliam played a perfect ball from midfield that sent Rief one-on-one with the keeper and the sophomore skipped her shot into the net. It was Rief's first goal of the season.

Quincy put the game away in the 86th minute as senior Taylor Lindwedel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) sent a pass to Pulliam, who touched the ball past her defender and laced a perfect shot into the back of the net. Pulliam now has three goals on the season, while Lindwedel has a team-best three assists.

The Lady Hawks out-shot the Flyers, 20-10, in the game and 10-2 in the second half. They also won the corner kick battle, 12-1. Sophomore keeper Krystal Felderman (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) made five saves to earn her first collegiate win in goal. Meyer made seven stops for Lewis.

The Lady Hawks will now hit the road to take on Saint Joseph's (1-5-1, 1-3 GLVC) in Rensselaer, Ind. on Friday (Sept. 25) at 5 p.m.
