Strong Team Win for QU over Montevallo

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team was just that on Saturday (Sept. 12) in Florence, Ala. QU had 12 players take the court against the University of Montevallo in their first match of the day and they came together to sweep UM, 3-0. The Hawks combined for 71 digs, 45 kills, 43 assists, and 11 blocks in the winning effort. The Hawks fell in the night cap, 3-1, to the host University of North Alabama.

The Hawks (4-4) dominated in all facets of the match against Montevallo (4-3). They led in every significant category with seven aces and a .187 hitting percentage. Bekah Raebel led the Hawks with 12 kills and a .550 attacking percentage elevated by sets from Rachael Binash off the bench in the third set. Raebel had six of her 12 kills in the final set including the match clinching 25-23 point.

In the first set, the Hawks withstood the storm of kills by Montevallo to take a 14-10 lead. Tied 25-25, Jessica Licurgo lifted the Hawks with a solo block and a kill to stun the Falcons 27-25. Licurgo finished with 10 kills and six blocks.

QU used their momentum to take the second set 25-21.

Miranda Rodriguez led the Hawks with 17 assists and 17 digs for her second double-double of the season.

North Alabama (6-2) was hot in their home gym hitting .269 in the final match of the tournament. QU could not overcome the strong UNA offense with a .154 hitting percentage. 

The Hawks showed a spark in the third set with a .206 hitting percentage. They held the Lions to a .188 hitting percentage in the third frame. The Hawks went on a 7-1 run early to take a 9-5 lead. QU withstood a four point run by the Lions to take the set 25-23.

The Lions won the final set 25-21 to take the match 3-1. 

Emily Lindemulder led the Hawks with 12 kills. The Lions had three players with double-digit kills.

The Hawks travel to Lindenwood University on Tuesday (Sept. 15) in a final non-conference matchup before the Great Lakes Valley Conference season starts. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
