Hawks' Season Ends in NCAA DII Midwest Regional

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Quincy University baseball team fell Drury University in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament on Saturday in an elimination game at Lou Brock Sports Complex on the campus of Lindenwood University.  DU took advantage of early miscues by QU and had some timely hitting late to down the Hawks 4-1.  QU had eight hits and left eight runners on with two errors.

The Panthers (33-23-1) rallied with two outs in the third inning against Graham Spraker (L, 5-2).  Ryan Wadkins doubled on a hustle play to left field.  The lead off hitter advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by the QU (40-17) third baseman to take an early 1-0 lead.

Spraker was able to pitch out of the inning with just one run allowed.  The sophomore threw seven innings allowing three runs with two earned.  The Panthers had nine hits and worked three walks out of Spraker.  He struck out two.

The Hawks answered in the top of the fourth inning.  Ryan Snyder reached on a single to center.  He was picked off of first base, but got in a rundown and got back safely.  Peter Cunningham singled on a slow roller to second base and it slipped under the bare hand of the Panther defender to allow Snyder to reached third.  JP Meyer connected on a long fly ball to right field that scored Snyder to tie the game.

Luke Burnidge tossed five innings of one run baseball for the Panthers allowing five hits and three walks with one strikeout.

Austin Simms (W, 4-2) came in for the Panthers in relief and tossed three scoreless innings.  Instead of going to Faulconer next as Drury did in the GLVC Championship, they went straight to Gage Jacobs (S, 13) in the ninth for the save.

The Panthers took the lead in the seventh inning.  It all got started with a single from Ryan Colombo who went 3-for-4 in the game.  Ryan Wadkins laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Colombo up to second.  Dallas Williams singled to right field to put runners on the corners.  Williams stole second base and Bobby Lang followed with a base hit to left field to score Colombo and Williams.

Three straight singles in the eighth inning gave the Panthers an insurance run and a 4-1 win.

The Panthers advance to play Truman State tonight at 7 p.m. at Lou Brock Stadium in St. Charles, Mo. on the campus of Lindenwood University.  Ashland and William Jewell play an elimination game that has been pushed back to a 4 p.m. first pitch.
