Wisdom Perfect at the Dish in QU's Sweep of Lincoln

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team won a pair of nonconference, in-region games on Tuesday (April 21) against visiting Lincoln, 9-4 and 7-3, at QU Stadium.

The Hawks (27-14) have now won 11 of their last 14 games, dating back to April 7. Quincy should also be in the conversation when the first edition of the Midwest Region rankings is announced on Wednesday (April 22) afternoon.

On Tuesday, the Hawks got started quickly on offense as Brynn Martinez and Kory Wisdom each singled before Ryan Snyder walked to load the bases with one out. Dominic Miles followed by sending a fly ball into a heavy wind blowing out to right that carried well beyond the fence for a grand slam. It was his second home run of the season and it gave the Hawks a 4-0 lead.

The Blue Tigers scored a couple in the third inning off QU starter Daniel Schnicker. Meanwhile, Kolton Clark kept the QU lineup off balance until the fifth when the Hawks broke it open with five runs.

Wisdom started the inning with a single. He went 6-for-6 on the day and reached base all eight times he came to the plate to raise his batting average to .473. David Jacob followed with a single, but Wisdom was thrown out trying to advance to third. Miles then delivered an RBI double before an RBI groundout by J.P. Meyer. Tommy Hager landed the big blow in the inning – a two-run double that scored two and stretched the lead to 8-2. A final run scored on an error.

Schnicker set the Blue Tigers (3-41) down in order in the top of the sixth, his final inning of work. Evan Cahn stranded a pair of runners in the seventh to close out the game.

Schnicker (3-0) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out three. Clark (0-7) took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Wisdom went 4-for-4 with a double and a run scored while Miles was 3-for-4 with a grand slam, a double, two runs and five RBI.

The Hawks started slowly in Game 2, though Braden Shull looked strong early. The left-hander kept the Blue Tigers off the board until the third when they tacked on a couple runs on three hits to take their first lead of the day.

Wisdom answered in the bottom of the inning, hitting the first pitch he saw from Tyler Roberts over the fence in right to cut the lead in half, 2-1.

Lincoln quickly got a run back in the top of the fourth before the Hawks took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Marek singled and Justin Blechle drew a one-out walk before Martinez unloaded for his second homer of the season – a three-run shot that gave QU a 4-3 edge.

Shull maintained the lead in the fifth before turning it over to Brandon Ley in the sixth. Ley struck out the side on 10 pitches with a dominating fastball.

Wisdom started a one-out rally in the sixth by getting hit by a pitch and going to third on an error. After Snyder was hit by a pitch on the elbow, Miles lifted a sac fly to left to give QU a 5-3 lead. Meyer followed with an RBI single before he and Snyder executed a successful double steal to give the Hawks a 7-3 cushion.

Teddy Rule came on for the seventh and struck out the final two batters of the game after Lincoln loaded the bases on him.

Shull (1-0) earned his first career win, going five innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked two. Roberts (1-6) suffered the loss as one of five pitchers to throw for Lincoln in Game 2.

Wisdom was 2-for-2 with a homer and a couple runs scored. Meyer went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Martinez drove in three on his home run.

The Hawks return to GLVC play on Friday (April 24) when they travel to Maryville (16-25, 9-19 GLVC). Quincy and Maryville will play a single game Friday and a doubleheader Saturday before a single, nine-inning game on Sunday.
