Lady Hawks Get Revenge on Pumas in GLVC Tournament

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team locked down defensively late against Saint Joseph's College to get some revenge in Pepsi Arena on Sunday (Mar. 1).  SJC came into Pepsi Arena on Feb. 14 and downed QU 64-57 earlier this season.  The Lady Hawks won when it mattered in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament First Round over the Pumas 52-49.  The Lady Hawks were the fifth seed in the tournament and hosted the 12th seeded Pumas.

The Lady Hawks (16-11) were strong defensively in the first half.  QU held Kalea Parks to two points in the first period and Parks was 0-6 from the field.  Saint Joseph's (11-18) turned the ball over nine times in the first half.  

Maggie Cunningham and Kara Gerbus got the Lady Hawks rolling early.  Gerbus his a jumper on the second possession to score the first two points of the game.  After an SJC two, Maggie Cunningham hit a three to retake the lead.  SJC answered with another layup, but Gerbus drained a three just four minutes into the game.  

The Lady Hawks expanded their lead late in the half when Erin Mennemeyer hit a jumper with just under five minutes until the break to give QU a 25-21 lead.  Neither team scored again until Tori Kuhn converted a layup with one minute and 26 seconds left before half.  Kuhn hit two more free throws with under a minute to play to give QU an eight point lead.

Katie Harold hit a three-pointer for the Pumas to cut the Lady Hawks lead to 29-24 headed into halftime.

The Pumas sparked a 13-2 run starting one minute into the second half.  SJC took a 42-38 lead with 12 minutes to play when Brittany Morris hit a trey.

QU kept the Pumas lead within four points and trailed 48-44 with five minutes to play.  Tori Kuhn got to the line and made two free throws to cut the lead to two.  

With two minutes and 36 seconds remaining, Tori Kuhn stole the ball from Kalea Parks.  After a missed three from the corner, Kara Gerbus got the rebound and converted the layup to tie the game.  

With two minutes remaining, Abbey Titzer went to the line and hit the front end free throw before SJC grabbed the rebound after the second free throw.  After a missed jumper by the Pumas, Tori Kuhn hit a jumper to give the Lady Hawks a 50-49 lead.  

SJC got the ball inbounds and Tiara Thomas set the trap in the QU full-court press.  Thomas came away with a loose ball and found a streaking Kara Gerbus who had nothing but paint between her and the basket.  Gerbus finished the fast break layup to give QU a 52-49 lead.  

QU got another turnover, but SJC got the ball back with 21 seconds to play down three.  The Pumas dribbled around to find an open shot, but the Lady Hawks swarmed the ball defensively and forced an air-ball with two seconds left.  The Lady Hawks eventually ran out the clock to secure a GLVC Tournament First Round win.

Kara Gerbus led the Lady Hawks with 13 points.  Maggie Cunningham and Tori Kuhn scored 11 points a piece.  Erin Mennemeyer led the Lady Hawks with seven rebounds.  Mennemeyer also added eight points.  

QU forced 19 turnovers and had 10 steals.  The Lady Hawks had 15 points off of turnovers.

The Lady Hawks will travel to St. Charles, Mo. to play in the GLVC Tournament Quarterfinals against the fourth seed University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday, Mar. 6.  The game time is to be announced.
