Lady Hawks Fight to the End, but Parkside Prevails

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Quincy University women's basketball team saw their season end on Friday afternoon (Mar. 6) at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo., but they went down with a fight.  With just nine players dressing, QU took the University of Wisconsin-Parkside down to the wire with hustle plays and solid defense.  UW-Parkside won the game 65-61, but the Lady Hawks trailed by as many as 13 points in the game that had four lead changes and two ties.

The Rangers (22-6) jumped out to a 13 point lead at 22-9 with nine minutes to play in the first half.

The Lady Hawks (16-12) found a spark when Anika Webster hit a three from the corner on the next possession.  With seven and a half minutes to play, Kara Gerbus hit a layup and one to pull within seven points.

The Rangers led 28-20 with three minutes left in the first half when Kara Gerbus hit a jumper for two.  After a miss by UW-Parkside, Gerbus drilled a three to make the score 28-25.

The Rangers made a basket with two minutes to play, but Kara Gerbus answered with another layup.  Gerbus stole the ball on the other end and Tori Kuhn eventually got a layup on the other end to pull within one point at 30-29.

The Rangers hit a three with 48 seconds left.  Anika Webster drew a foul with 36 seconds to play in the half and hit both free throws.  The Rangers missed the mark with 11 seconds left and Maggie Cunningham got the inbound pass and sprinted the court to lay it in to tie the game at 33-33 as the buzzer sounded.

The Lady Hawks had 12 points off turnovers in the first half.  Kara Gerbus led the team with 17 points.  Maggie Cunningham and Anika Webster chipped in six points a piece.

The Lady Hawks could credit their comeback to their full court press and zone defense in the first half.  The defense continued in the second half, but the shots were not falling as easy.

The Rangers' lead grew to eight points with nine minutes to play.

Anika Webster and Maggie Cunningham teamed up in the second half to keep the Lady Hawks close.  Webster scored 10 points in the second stanza and Cunningham notched eight points.

Anika Webster drove to the lane and got a layup to fall with a minute and a half to play to make the score 59-57 in favor of the Rangers.  Gaby Bronson went to the line for UW-Parkside and converted both to push the lead back to four points.

With 48 seconds to play, Anika Webster missed a layup that was rebounded by Erin Mennemeyer.  Mennemeyer turned for a hook, but it bounced off the back of the rim and toward the QU bench.  Megan Wienstroer scrambled to make a play with a Ranger defender draped on her arm and dove into the bench drawing the foul.  Wienstroer made the two free throws to bring the deficit to two points.

Kristin Conniff hit a mid-range jumper with 17 seconds to play.  Anika Webster hit a layup on the other end with six seconds left and the Lady Hawks fouled the Rangers.  UWP hit both to put the game out of reach.

Kara Gerbus led the Lady Hawks with 17 points.  Anika Webster finished with a double-double totaling 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Maggie Cunningham never left the court for the second straight game scoring 14 points for QU.  Cunningham led the team with four assists.

The Lady Hawks out-rebounded the Rangers 38-31.  The Rangers took advantage of the free throw line in the second half with 11 charity shot makes.  QU was uncharacteristically cold from three hitting just three triples.  QU scored 37 of their points in the paint, while the Rangers scored just 22 in the paint.

The Rangers move on to play the winner of the Drury University and University of Indianapolis game tomorrow at 6 p.m.
