Quincy Clinches Win over Knights at the Charity Stripe

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Quincy University women's basketball team had five players score in double-figures at Bellarmine University in an 86-83 win in Louisville.  QU hit 14 of 16 free throws in the final three minutes to clinch the victory over BU.  The score was tied seven times and the lead was changed nine times throughout the game.  The Lady Hawks shot 84.6% from the charity stripe making 22 free throws.  The Knights found themselves at the line 17 times making 13 freebies.

Bellarmine (11-10, 6-7 GLVC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead early as the Lady Hawks (13-8, 8-5 GLVC) struggled to score in the first three minutes of play.  

Maggie Cunningham hit a jumper in the paint followed by a three-pointer from Carly Bettencourt on back-to-back possessions to pull QU within two.

The Knights expanded their lead to six points, but the Lady Hawks began chipping away when Maggie Cunningham converted a layup with 14 minutes left in the first half.  Carly Bettencourt hit a three with 12 minutes left before half to pull within one point.  On the very next possession Carly Beebe converted a layup and a free throw to give the Lady Hawks a 15-13 lead.

The Knights and Lady Hawks would trade the lead for the rest of the first half.  Down one, 34-33, with 38 seconds left before the break, Carly Bettencourt hit her third three of the game to give the Lady Hawks a two point edge.

The Knights answered when Jennifer Smith hit a jumper and got fouled by Erin Mennemeyer.  Smith made her free throw with five seconds left to take Bellarmine into halftime with a 37-36 lead.

The Lady Hawks flipped a switch on offense in the second half making five of their first six shots.  QU took an early 46-42 lead.

After a pair of free throws by Bellarmine, the Lady Hawks scored eight straight points to take a 10-point lead with 14 minutes to play.  

With 10 minutes and 30 seconds remaining Carly Bettencourt hit her fourth three.  Bettencourt followed it up with a career-high fifth three-pointer to give the Lady Hawks their largest lead at 11 points, 66-55.

With four minutes remaining, the Knights started their comeback.  Morgan Clemons hit a jumper for the Knights.  Kelsey Adwell forced a turnover and went to the line where she hit both free throws.  Destony Curry drilled a three with three minutes and 15 seconds left cut the Lady Hawks' lead to just two points.

From that moment on it became a game of free throws for the Lady Hawks and QU was up for the challenge.  Anika Webster, Carly Beebe, Carly Bettencourt, and Maggie Cunningham combined to make 14 of 16 free throws in the final three minutes of play.  

Whitney Hartlage missed a three-pointer for the Knights with six seconds remaining and Erin Mennemeyer came down with her 11th rebound to secure the 86-83 win for the Lady Hawks.

The Lady Hawks scored 50 points in the second half and shot 53.6% from the field.  QU made 18 of 22 free throws in the second half.

Carly Bettencourt and Maggie Cunningham led the Lady Hawks with 18 points a piece.  Cunningham was a perfect eight of eight from the free throw line.  Bettencourt made a career-high five threes. Carly Beebe scored 15 points and led the team with five assists and six steals.  Anika Webster finished with 14 points for her 12th double-figure scoring game.  Erin Mennemeyer scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her third double-double this season.

The two teams had very similar numbers in most major categories except free throws.  The Lady Hawks made 22 of 26 free throws while Bellarmine hit 13 of 17 from the line.  Bellarmine out-rebounded QU 42-41.  BU also outshot QU 45.1% to 43.9%.  

The Knights were led by Kelsey Adwell with 14 points.  Mariah Gador had 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for BU.

The Lady Hawks will welcome the University of Indianapolis to Pepsi Arena on Thursday, Feb. 12.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. on Thursday night.
