Screaming Eagles Top Lady Hawks 76-55

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Quincy University women's basketball team fell to the University of Southern Indiana 76-55 on Thursday night in Evansville, Ind.  QU struggled shooting in the first half hitting 29.6% of their shots from the field, but hung in shooting 45.4% from three.  The Lady Hawks could not keep up their effort from beyond the arc in the second half.  QU hit one three-pointer after halftime on eight attempts.  USI shot 41.9% from the floor in the first half and picked up the pace in the second half hitting 51.6% of their shots.  USI out-rebounded the Lady Hawks 42-34.

The Screaming Eagles (17-5, 9-3 GLVC) started the game taking a 19-9 lead in the first 10 minutes of play.  

The Lady Hawks (12-8, 7-5 GLVC) mounted a comeback from the sure-hand of Kara Gerbus from behind the three-point line.  Gerbus scored nine of 11 points during a Lady Hawk 11-2 run spanning the next four minutes.  

With the score at 22-21, USI scored the next three points to take a 25-21 lead.  Carly Bettencourt hit a three with just over four minutes remaining to bring the USI lead back to one point.  

The Screaming Eagles scored the next 11 points before Anika Webster hit two free throws with five seconds left to go to halftime with the Lady Hawks trailing 36-26.

USI scored the first six points of the second half.  QU was held scoreless until Anika Webster converted a layup with 15 minutes and 27 seconds remaining.  

The Lady Hawks could not bring the deficit to less than 10 points the rest of the game.  

USI took their largest lead of 26 points with three minutes and 41 seconds left in the game.  

Kara Gerbus tied a career-high with her 18th point on a jumper with four minutes and 50 seconds left to play.

Anika Webster also tied a career-high with 15 points when she hit a jumper with two minutes and 39 seconds left in the game.

Gerbus led the team with 18 points and six rebounds.  Webster finished second for the Lady Hawks with 15 points and five boards.  It was Webster's 11th double-digit scoring effort this season.  Erin Mennemeyer scored nine points and also gathered five rebounds.

The Lady Hawks were held to 35.2% shooting from the field and 31.6% from beyond the arc.  QU stole the ball 10 times, but had 20 turnovers to eight assists.  

USI had four players score in double-figures.  Anna Hackert led the way with 18 points and nine rebounds.  Taylor Stevenson led the bench in scoring with 14 points.  Autumn Miller and Mariah Nimmo scored 10 points a piece.  USI had 12 steals and just 15 turnovers while converting 14 assists.  USI scored 38 points in the paint while holding the Lady Hawks to just 14 points in the paint.

QU will travel to Louisville, Ky. to play Bellarmine University on Saturday afternoon.  Tip-off at Bellarmine is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
