Gerbus, Mennemeyer Pace Lady Hawks To Key Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team on Saturday (Feb. 21) looked to secure better footing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference seeding race and came away with an 82-62 win over Maryville at Pepsi Arena.

The Lady Hawks (14-11, 9-8 GLVC) pulled into a three-way tie in the GLVC West and have a chance to move into a tie for second on Thursday (Feb. 26) when they play host to Truman State.

On Saturday, the Saints (13-13, 7-10 GLVC) jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before Quincy rallied to tie it on a 3-pointer by junior forward Kara Gerbus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin) and a layup by freshman forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.).

The teams mostly traded baskets until the Lady Hawks went on a 14-2 run over a four-minute stretch that gave the hosts a 40-25 lead with 3:28 to play in the first half. Gerbus and sophomore guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Murray State) hit back-to-back treys in that stretch, followed by a short jumper by junior center Erin Mennemeyer (Old Monroe, Mo./Troy Buchanan) to cap the run.

The Lady Hawks took a 43-33 lead into halftime after hitting eight 3-pointers in the first half.

Quincy still led by eight, 56-48, with 13:49 to play before going on a 7-0 run that included five straight points by junior guard Maggie Cunningham (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) and a jumper by Mennemeyer to cap the run. Mennemeyer scored 12 of her career-high 17 points in the second half, shooting 6-for-6 from the field after halftime.

Quincy maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Gerbus joined Mennemeyer in double figures with a career-high 24 points and hit a career-best five 3-pointers. Cunningham filled up the stat sheet with nine points, five rebounds, seven assists and three steals and junior guard Carly Beebe (Vermont, Ill./South Fulton) added eight points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The Lady Hawks shot 41.7 percent (30-for-72) from the field, but knocked down 11 3-pointers. They also turned the ball over just 10 times while turning over the Saints 21 times. Maryville shot 45.1 percent (23-for-51) from the floor and was 50 percent (8-for-16) from 3-point range. Alex Hillyer led the Saints with 15 points in 18 minutes off the bench.

Quincy will celebrate Senior Day on Thursday (Feb. 26) when they play Truman State at 5 p.m. in the regular season finale.
