Hawks Complete Two-Match Sweep of Grand Canyon

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team closed out a two-match weekend series against MIVA foe Grand Canyon with a 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 30-28, 25-21) win on Saturday (Feb. 21) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (9-6, 3-4 MIVA) have now won three straight matches and four of their last five to climb past the 'Lopes (7-6, 2-4 MIVA) in the MIVA standings.

Junior opposite Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) led the Hawks and matched a season-high with 16 kills (.536) on 28 swings with just one error.

Grand Canyon opened the match with three straight points and never trailed in Set 1 to take a 25-18 win. The 'Lopes hit .545 in the opening set, while Quincy hit .364.

Set 2 went back-and-forth as the teams exchanged a series of runs. The set was tied at 15 before the Hawks reeled off four straight points with Lawson on the serve to take a 19-15 lead. GCU responded with their own 4-0 run before the teams exchanged sideouts.

Senior outside Andrew Cavanaugh (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) gave the Hawks set point at 24-23, but a service error tied it back up. After an attack error by the 'Lopes, Gamache and sophomore middle Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) combined on a block to win the set, 26-24.

Set 3 was even tighter, featuring 19 tie scores and 11 lead changes. The Hawks had set point at 24-23, but Gerrard Lipscombe put down two straight kills to give GCU the advantage. QU fought off three straight set points and took a 28-27 lead after kills by Kelso and Gamache. After a service error, Cavanaugh laced a kill and an attack error by Grand Canyon gave the set to the Hawks. Gamache totaled eight kills on 13 attacks in the frame.

Quincy jumped out to a 6-1 lead in Set 4 before the 'Lopes brought it back to 11-10. That's when junior outside Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) took over behind the service line. The Hawks scored nine straight points, including two aces from Lawson. When the run was snapped, the Hawks led 20-11. Grand Canyon battled back to make it interesting at 21-18, but the Hawks closed out by scoring three of the last four points – the last coming on a dump kill by sophomore setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby).

Gamache registered his third straight double-double with 13 digs to go with his 16 kills. Pranger (.500) and Lawson (.100) had nine kills apiece and redshirt-junior outside Brian Rogan (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North) and Kelso (.312) put down eight kills each. Fanfulik had five kills and dished out 50 assists.

The Hawks hit .328 in the match, while holding GCU to a .295 output. Quincy won the battles in kills, 60-49, and blocks, 7-6.

The Hawks take their three-match winning streak to the Chicago region for matchups against the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the country when they take on Loyola and Lewis, respectively. The Hawks and Ramblers play Thursday (Feb. 26) at 7 p.m.
