Tritons Steal Win from Lady Hawks in OT Thriller

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Quincy University women's basketball team saw a 10-point lead evaporate in the second half with 11 minutes to play against the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday night (Feb. 19).  UMSL led by two points with 21 seconds remaining when Maggie Cunningham hit a runner in the paint that swished with three seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.  The Lady Hawks missed four free throws in overtime to fall 80-75 to the Tritons.

The Tritons (13-11, 9-7 GLVC) took an early five point lead and led by their largest lead of six points with 14 minutes remaining in the first half.

Kara Gerbus hit a jumper followed by a Nikia Edom three and a Carly Beebe three to give the Lady Hawks (13-11, 8-8 GLVC) the lead 16-14 with 12 minutes to play.

QU and UMSL traded leads with UMSL staying within a possession until Megan Wienstroer hit a three with four minutes remaining amde it 30-25.

After an UMSL jumper, Maggie Cunningham hit two free throws, and Carly Beebe hit a three to extend their lead to eight points.  

Kelly Kunkel hit a layup while getting fouled with nine seconds left.  Kunkel converted the free throw to cut the Lady Hawks' lead to 35-30.

Carly Beebe hit a three with 14 minutes remaining and knocked down two free throws on the following possession to give the Lady Hawks a 10 point lead with 13 minutes and 30 seconds left in the second half.  

After an UMSL timeout, the Tritons rattled off a 10-point run to tie the game 51-51 with 11 minutes to play.

The lead switched back and forth again as there were 10 lead changes and 12 tie scores in the game.

With UMSL leading 69-67, Maggie Cunningham drove the lane and elevated to hit a floater in the paint with three seconds left.  The half-court attempt from UMSL was wide of the basket and this game went to overtime.

The overtime period became a game of free throws.  UMSL's Kelly Kunkel and Kelly McGovern were the only two players to score field goals in the five minute frame.  UMSL was seven of eight from the line while the Lady Hawks hit six of 10 from the charity stripe.  UMSL finished the game with an offensive rebound and two made free throws to win 80-75.

The Lady Hawks were led by Carly Beebe with 16 points.  QU shot 44.8% from the field in the game.  Beebe hit three three-pointers as QU was 39.1% from beyond the arc.  Anika Webster scored 15 points for QU.  Maggie Cunningham finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.  

UMSL out-rebounded the Lady Hawks 40-31.  The Tritons shot 47% from the floor.  They were led by Kelly Kunkel with 25 points.  Alexis Lawrence netted 21 points for UMSL.  Amber Daly finished with 18 points and eight assists for the Tritons.  UMSL finished with 34 points in the paint and 16 offensive rebounds.

The Lady Hawks will play host to Maryville University on Saturday, Feb. 21.  Tip-off in Pepsi Arena is scheduled for 1 p.m.
