Hawks Start, Finish Strong In 86-73 Win Over Pumas

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team got out to a fast start and closed strong as the Hawks dispatched Saint Joseph's, 86-73, in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Saturday (Feb. 14) afternoon in Pepsi Arena.

Junior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) got the Hawks going with 14 of his 20 points in the first half and redshirt-sophomore forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) scored 19 of his team-best 21 after halftime to put the Pumas away.

The Hawks (12-13, 6-9 GLVC) jumped out to a 13-7 lead early in the first half, getting seven points from Eneogwe in the first five minutes of the game.

Quincy had its lead up to seven points at 19-12 and 22-15 after Eneogwe threw down an alley-oop from sophomore guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) followed that up with a 3-pointer off a feed from senior forward Scott Hahn (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa). Eneogwe scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half.

The Hawks led by as many as eight before halftime and took a 40-33 lead into the break. Hahn scored seven of his 12 points before the intermission.

Quincy came out of halftime and built its lead up to 17, 58-41, with 15 minutes left in the second half and McGaughey scored seven straight points, the last two on a layup off an entry pass from senior guard Ja'mil Jones (Blythewood, S.C./Pasco Hernando CC).

The Pumas started to chip away from there, trimming the lead down to seven, 66-59, with 8:25 remaining as the Hawks started forcing shots outside of their offensive game plan.

Saint Joseph's had a chance to cut it to four points on its next possession, but the Hawks forced a miss and junior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) buried a deep jumper. The next basket came on another transition lob alley-oop from Senor to Eneogwe, who snared the ball near the rim and rocked it home with two hands to push the lead back to double digits.

The lead never slipped under eight after that point as the Hawks held the Pumas to 31.3 percent (10-for-32) shooting in the second half and 34.4 percent (21-for-61) for the game.

SJC guard Cameron Vines, the leading scorer for the Pumas, scored a game-high 24 points, but shot 5-for-16 from the field as head coach Marty Bell rotated Senor, Eneogwe and junior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) defensively on Vines.

McGaughey finished with a season-high 21 points and matched a career high with 11 rebounds for his fourth career double-double. Jones scored 12 points to go with four rebounds and five assists. Senor had six points, four rebounds, four steals and matched a career high with eight assists. Hoover scored eight points and collected eight boards.

The Hawks, who have struggled at the line this season, shot 80 percent (16-for-20) in Saturday and went 6-for-16 (37.5 percent) from 3-point range.

The Hawks, who are still in a battle to host a GLVC Tournament first round game, travel to Missouri-St. Louis for a crucial conference game on Thursday (Feb. 19) at 7:30 p.m. The Tritons (16-9, 8-7 GLVC) have lost four of their last five.
