Lady Hawks Win 7th Straight On Cunningham's Runner

QUINCY, Ill. – Senior guard Maggie Cunningham (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) sank a runner with 2.6 second remaining to lift the Quincy University women's basketball team to a 67-66 win over Rockhurst at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Dec. 5) afternoon.

The Lady Hawks (7-0, 2-0 GLVC) remained undefeated on the season with their seventh straight win.

Rockhurst (5-2, 1-1 GLVC) took a 66-65 lead with eight seconds left on a mid-range jumper by Mary Dineen.

After a timeout, Cunningham raced the length of the floor, drove into the paint with her left hand and hoisted a right-handed runner from eight feet that banged off the backboard and through the net.

Lauren Meyers' heave from 60 feet fell short to seal the win for the Lady Hawks, who will have a week off heading into their next contest.

The game featured 15 tie scores and went back-and-forth throughout as the teams traded the lead 13 times. Rockhurst led for 14 minutes, 38 seconds and the Lady Hawks led for 13 minutes, 49 seconds.

Quincy led by as many as eight points in the second quarter after a layup by freshman forward Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis.) gave QU a 24-16 lead with 5:41 remaining in the first half. Rockhurst followed with an 8-0 run.

The teams then went three minutes without a point before Cunningham got in the paint for a layup. A 3-pointer by Haleigh Cindrich gave the visitors a 27-26 lead at halftime.

Quincy held the lead for much of a helter-skelter third quarter that featured 17 fouls. QU led by as many as seven points, 49-42, late in the period and took a five-point advantage into the fourth.

Rockhurst took a three-point lead, 64-61, with 1:30 remaining before Cunningham sank a baseline jumper to cut the deficit to one with just over a minute left.

Quincy then got a stop and Cunningham went to the free throw line where she is nearly automatic and sank a pair to give QU a 65-64 lead with 34 seconds left.

Dineen hit a jumper on the next possession, leading to Cunningham's heroics.

The Lady Hawks fought through some offensive difficulties on Saturday, overcoming a 32 percent (16-for-50) shooting performance.

Senior guard Carly Beebe (Vermont, Ill./South Fulton) was a bright spot for the Lady Hawks offensively, scoring a game-high 21 points to go with four rebounds and four steals. She hit Quincy's only two 3-pointers in the game.

Cunningham scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half and shot 4-for-4 from the line. She also had five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Schumacher had 10 points in 15 minutes off the bench.

The Lady Hawks led in rebounds, 37-34, and also forced 21 Rockhurst turnovers. Dineen and Marisa Lowe paced the visitors with 17 points apiece.

Quincy will take a week off for final exams before returning to the Pepsi Arena floor next Saturday (Dec. 12) to take on Robert Morris-Peoria at 1 p.m.
