QU Men Win Fifth Straight, Defeat Rockhurst 77-67

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team won its fifth straight game on Saturday (Dec. 5) afternoon at Pepsi Arena, defeating Rockhurst, 77-67, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

The win was the 200th in the 13-year career of head coach Marty Bell, who has the Hawks on their longest winning streak since the 2011-12 season after completing a weekend sweep of GLVC opponents.

The Hawks, who did not trail in their last three games, were behind for just 31 seconds on Saturday after scoring the first seven points against Rockhurst. Junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) knocked down an open 3-pointer and junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) connected on a short jumper. Washington capped the run with a mid-range jumper.

Meanwhile, on the defensive end Quincy forced Rockhurst to miss its first six shots while forcing three turnovers in the game's first four minutes.

The visitors rallied with a 6-0 run that gave them a 14-13 lead with 11:10 left in the first half as the hosts lacked rhythm offensively.

Quincy snapped the Rockhurst run with a steal by senior guard Jordan Wilson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) and finish at the rim by junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast).

Quincy went ahead by as many as 11 in the first half after Tagarelli's layup with 6:43 remaining. QU took a 40-31 edge into halftime after holding Rockhurst to 32 percent (8-for-25) shooting in the first 20 minutes.

Rockhurst was able to cut into Quincy's lead in the second half with a 10-1 run. Austin LeVan's 3-pointer with 8:47 remaining cut QU's lead to 58-54. LeVan led all scorers with 26 points and shooting 6-for-13 from 3-point range.

QU built the lead back to eight points, but RU trimmed it back to four, 64-60, after a pair of free throws by Malachi Nix.

Quincy was undeterred, going on an 8-0 run with six points coming from Tagarelli, who led the Hawks with 23 points and nine boards. Rockhurst cut QU's 11-point lead down to five in the final minute, but Quincy went 5-for-6 from the line in the last 35 seconds to seal the victory.

Junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) joined Tagarelli in double figures, scoring all 13 of his points in the second half. Senior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) scored 11 points, also going 9-for-10 from the free throw stripe.

Senor shot 5-for-8 from the field for 11 points. Wilson contributed a pair of 3-pointers and two steals in 13 productive minutes off the bench.

Quincy won the battle on the glass, 41-32, and shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58) from the floor. They also went 22-for-26 (84.6 percent) from the line.

QU will have the next nine days off before returning to the court on Dec. 15 at Truman State. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. in Kirksville, Mo.
