Early Deficit Downs Hawks at Truman

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Quincy University men's basketball team cut into a first-half deficit at Truman State, but the Bulldogs pulled away in the second half for a 91-76 win over the Hawks at Pershing Arena on Tuesday (Dec. 15) night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

It was Quincy's first loss in GLVC play on the season and snapped the Hawks' five-game winning streak.

The Hawks (5-4, 2-1 GLVC) fell behind early and were never able to fully get out of their early hole as Truman built a 33-16 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half.

Quincy was able to get back in the game by getting defensive stops and keeping the Bulldogs (7-3, 2-1 GLVC) off the offensive glass. Truman had just four offensive rebounds in the game.

On the offensive end, junior wing Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) gave the Hawks a lift, knocking down three 3-pointers in the last 10 minutes of the half. His triple with 3:48 remaining cut TSU's lead down to 37-33.

The Bulldogs quickly worked their lead back to eight points, but Washington's three-point play with one minute left cut it back to 41-38 and the Hawks trailed, 43-38, going into halftime.

Junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) scored 11 points in the first half on 5-for-7 shooting. He would finish with a game-high 24 points.

In the second half, the deficit never got under five as the Bulldogs resumed their early shotmaking, hitting five threes in the last 20 minutes.

After trailing by 14 points, 66-52, the Hawks went on a 7-0 run with Washington's trey and consecutive buckets by Tagarelli. That trimmed the lead to seven points, but Andrew Vander Zwaag's 3-pointer on the other end took the air out QU's run.

Washington was Quincy's only other player in double figures with 15 points. Junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) scored seven of his nine points in the second half. Junior forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) had seven points off the bench after missing the last five games due to injury.

The Hawks won the battle on the glass, 35-31, but were only able to force nine TSU turnovers.

Six Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by 18 each from Connor Erickson and Cole Myers. The Bulldogs shot 54.2 percent (32-for-59) from the field, while holding Quincy to a 41.9 percent (26-for-62) mark.

The Hawks return to the floor on Saturday (Dec. 19) at the QU Subway Holiday Classic at Pepsi Arena. Quincy plays Southern Arkansas at 3:15 p.m. Truman will play Ohio Valley in the opener at 1 p.m.
