Hawks Light Up Pepsi Arena, Defeat Muleriders, 100-76

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team was red-hot from 3-point range as the Hawks wiped out Southern Arkansas, 100-76, on Saturday (Dec. 19) – the first day of the QU Subway Holiday Classic at Pepsi Arena.
 
The Hawks buried 17 3-pointers, their most since at least the 2006-07 season. Senior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Jeffersontown/Cincinnati State) led the Hawks with a career-high 25 points, going 3-for-5 from 3-point range and 10-for-11 from the line. He also chipped in six assists.
 
Quincy (6-4) trailed early as Southern Arkansas (4-5) took a 7-0 lead. The Muleriders forced QU into four straight missed shots and three turnovers in that stretch before junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) knocked down a three to stop the run. Senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) and Jackson followed with triples of their own to give the Hawks a 9-7 advantage.
 
The Hawks forced the Muleriders to go without a field goal for a three-minute stretch as they took a 20-13 lead with 10 minutes left in the half.
 
QU led 31-24 with 5:43 left in the half when they went on a run of six straight made baskets, including five 3-pointers to take a 48-35 lead. Des Jardins' triple off his own offensive rebound as time expired gave Quincy a 51-37 lead at halftime.
 
The Hawks were 11-for-16 (68.8 percent) from 3-point range in the opening half.
 
Quincy quickly pushed the lead to 19 points early in the second half on a dunk by junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) off a feed from junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC), who followed up with a three-point play.
 
A 3-pointer by junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) gave the Hawks a 69-44 lead with 15:31 remaining.
 
The Hawks led by as many as 39 points, 90-51, in the second half after Tagarelli knocked down a couple free throws with 9:27 to play.
 
The Hawks forced the Muleriders into 20 turnovers in the game, while committing a season-high 21 themselves. The difference came in the transition to offense as the Hawks turned the miscues into 29 points. SAU scored just nine points off QU turnovers.
 
The Hawks shot 54.4 percent (31-for-57) from the field and held the Muleriders to 43.3 percent (29-for-67) shooting. Overall, QU was 17-for-32 (53.3 percent) from 3-point range.
 
Des Jardins polished off a career-high 17 points with five 3-pointers. Tagarellie hadded 15 points. Senor II chipped in 13 points and Washington added 12.
 
Jaron Davis led Southern Arkansas with 21 points on 7-for-16 shooting. SAU had just three assists on 29 made field goals.
 
The Hawks return to the Pepsi Arena floor on Sunday (Dec. 20) when they take on Ohio Valley at 3:15 p.m. OVU lost to Truman on Saturday, 86-68. The Bulldogs and Muleriders square off at 1 p.m.
