Hawks Beat OVU in QU Subway Holiday Classic Finale

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team bounced back from a 10-point second half deficit to defeat Ohio Valley, 80-74, in the finale of the QU Subway Holiday Classic at Pepsi Arena on Sunday (Dec. 20) afternoon.

Quincy and Truman were the co-champions as both squads went 2-0 against Southern Arkansas and Ohio Valley. It was QU's first title since the 2010 season and seventh overall in 16 seasons.

The Hawks (7-4), winners of seven of their last eight going into Christmas break, fell behind the Fighting Scots early, 10-2, before going on their own 10-0 run to take a 12-10 lead.

The teams traded the lead four times in the second half. Any time one team would go on a run, the other would answer back. Quincy went up by six, 27-21, after a short jumper by junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) with 7:35 left in the first half.

Ohio Valley answered with an 8-0 run to regain the lead, 29-27. The Fighting Scots (2-10) took a nine-point lead as part of a 16-1 run in which they held the Hawks without a field goal for more than seven minutes. Tagarelli's bucket with 25 seconds left cut the deficit to 37-30 heading into halftime.

Darryl Walker nailed a 3-pointer for the visitors to start the second half to give them a 10-point lead, but QU started to chip away, tying the game at 47-47 on a terrific three-point play by junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West), who threw down a monster two-handed slam over Robert Smelser.

Senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) gave the Hawks their first lead of the second half with a 3-pointer moments later to start a 7-0 run that gave the hosts a 56-49 lead.

The Fighting Scots answered with their own 7-0 run and took a 61-60 lead with 5:31 remaining. The game was tied at 63-63 went Quincy got a couple baskets by junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) and Tagarelli. Junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) tacked on a 3-pointer to give QU a 70-63 lead with 2:41 remaining.

The lead never got under four the rest of the way as senior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Jeffersontown/Cincinnati State) and Washington iced the game by combining to go 8-for-8 from the stripe in the final minute.

McGaughey finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth career double-double. He was 8-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-2 from long distance. McGaughey was named the tournament most valuable player.

He led five Hawks in double figures as Tagarelli added 15 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Jackson scored 12 points with eight coming from the line. Washington finished with 11 points, including three 3-pointers and Senor added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Walker led the Fighting Scots with 23 points on 8-for-20 shooting. Walker and Tagarelli joined McGaughey on the all-tournament team. Truman's Andrew Vander Zwaag and Southern Arkansas' CJ Elkins were the other two members of that squad.

The Hawks will now have two full weeks off before returning to the court on Jan. 3 at Pepsi Arena to take on Culver-Stockton in the final nonconference matchup of the season.
