Hawks Roll In Second Half, Defeat Culver-Stockton 98-69

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team closed the first half on a 7-0 run and outscored Culver-Stockton by 23 points in the second half as the Hawks opened 2016 with a 98-69 nonconference win at Pepsi Arena on Sunday (Jan. 3) afternoon.

The Hawks (8-4) have now won three straight and eight of their last nine games. They will resume Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday (Jan. 7) when they play host to Illinois Springfield at Pepsi Arena.

Quincy led for more than 34 minutes of the action, though the Wildcats (7-6) stayed with the Hawks throughout the first half.

The hosts got a dunk from junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) and then turned a steal into a Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) layup to take a 25-14 lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half.

The Wildcats slowly cut into the lead as Quincy went cold from the field, going 2-for-9 to allow the visitors to take a 32-31 lead with two minutes left in the half. Junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) answered Eric Moles' go-ahead 3-pointer with a triple of his own to give QU a 34-32 edge. Jojuan Graham followed with a 3-pointer for CSC, but a trey by sophomore wing Bobby Frasco (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect/Buffalo) gave QU the lead back.

That last 3-pointer started an individual 7-0 run by Frasco, who converted on the fastbreak off a steal by Senor and then closed the half at the buzzer with a layup from a dribble-drive feed by senior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State). The run gave QU a 41-35 lead at halftime.

Early in the second half, the Hawks used a 12-0 run over a two-minute stretch to take control of the game, 62-40, with 14:35 left. QU shot 5-for-7 from the field in that stretch and forced CSC to go 0-for-4 with a turnover.

Later in the half, Washington buried two consecutive 3-pointers that stretched Quincy's lead to 85-58 before redshirt-freshman guard Damon Patterson (Florissant, Mo./Chaminade) put the finishing touch on the game with a mid-range jumper.

The Hawks shot 54.4 percent (37-for-68) from the field, including a 48 percent (12-for-25) from 3-point range. QU is now shooting 45.5 percent (77-for-169) from long distance in its last seven games. Quincy forced 22 turnovers defensively and outscored the Wildcats in the paint, 46-30.

McGaughey led the Hawks with 21 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor. He sank all eight of his free throws. Washington added 14 points and junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) chipped in 13. Frasco finished with 12 points in 14 productive minutes off the bench. All 12 players who played on Sunday scored.

Graham paced the Wildcats with 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting. The Wildcats won the battle on the glass, 33-30.

The Hawks resume GLVC play on Thursday (Jan. 7) when they welcome Illinois Springfield to Pepsi Arena for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
