Edom's 22 Points Pace Lady Hawks to GLVC Victory

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team pulled away from William Jewell in the fourth quarter and remain unbeaten with a 76-64 win over the Cardinals at Pepsi Arena on Thursday (Dec. 3) night. It was the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.
 
The Lady Hawks (6-0, 1-0 GLVC) were highly efficient shooting the ball on the night, hitting on 54.9 percent (28-for-51) from the floor, including a 50 percent (11-for-22) from beyond the arc. Quincy entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in 3-point percentage (46 percent).
 
Quincy trailed by five points early, 10-5, before rolling to an 11-0 run capped by a layup by senior center Erin Mennemeyer (Old Monroe, Mo./Troy Buchanan) off a feed from senior forward Kara Gerbus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin).
 
QU took a 24-17 lead into the second quarter, riding the hot hand of junior guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Romeville/Murray State), who shot sank three triples on her way to nine points in the opening stanza. She scored a game-high 22 points and was 6-for-7 from 3-point range.
 
Jewell cut the Lady Hawks' lead to 37-33 at halftime and took a pair of one-point leads in the third quarter as the home team struggled with the Cardinals' full-court pressure.
 
Quincy settled things with back-to-back 3-pointers by Edom and junior guard Rachel Ruzevich (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg/Moraine Valley CC) to take a 47-42 lead.
 
Leading by four early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Hawks put away the Cardinals (4-6, 0-1 GLVC) with an 8-0 run bookended by threes from Gerbus and senior guard Maggie Cunningham (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) to give QU a 63-51 lead with six minutes left. The lead never got under double digits thereafter.
 
Mennemeyer finished with 15 points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. Cunningham was the third Lady Hawk in double figures with 13 points, seven boards and five assists. Gerbus drilled a pair of 3-pointers and finished with eight points.
 
The Lady Hawks held the Cardinals to 40.4 percent (23-for-57) shooting and won the battle on the glass, 36-25.
 
Madison Campbell and Maddie Nelson paced William Jewell with 12 points apiece.
 
The Lady Hawks look to ride their winning streak to seven on Saturday (Dec. 5) when they battle Rockhurst at 1 p.m. at Pepsi Arena.
