Hawks Stay Hot, Run Winning Streak to Four

QUINCY, Ill. – For the third consecutive game, the Quincy University men's basketball team never trailed as the Hawks opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with an 89-60 rout of William Jewell on Thursday (Dec. 3) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (4-3, 1-0 GLVC) have led or been tied with their opponents for the last 159 minutes, 39 seconds of gameplay. On Nov. 21, RMU-Springfield scored the first basket of the game, but the Hawks have not trailed since that point.

Also for the second straight game, the Hawks lit up the nets for 15 3-pointers as six players hit multiple triples, led by junior guard Von Washington (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan), who went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Prior to Tuesday's game at Lindenwood, the Hawks had not hit 15 threes in nearly seven years.

Washington bookended a game-opening 16-6 run with a pair of 3-pointers as the Hawks played an outstanding offensive floor game. They assisted on 22 of 30 made field goals and shot 51.7 percent (15-for-29) in each half. The Hawks also turned 17 William Jewell turnovers into 25 points and led on the fastbreak, 16-9.

The Cardinals (2-3, 0-1 GLVC) cut QU's lead down to four, 22-18, but Quincy responded with a 10-0 run over a span of four minutes that gave the home team a 35-20 lead with six minutes left in the first half. A 3-pointer by junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) capped the run.

A midrange jumper by junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) gave the Hawks a 42-30 lead heading into halftime.

Defensively, the Hawks flummoxed William Jewell's leading scorers. Darius Thomas and Matt Lassen came in averaging 20 points per game apiece. The Hawks limited the duo to 11 points combined on 5-for-16 shooting, including a 1-for-8 mark from long distance.

In the second half, the Hawks quickly built their lead to 22 points on five straight points by McGaughey, whose latter shot came on a great feed from senior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) in transition. Jackson finished with a game-high seven assists.

The Cardinals never got the margin closer than 17 as Quincy continued to hit from long range, burying nine triples on 15 tries in the second half.

Washington paced the Hawks with a game-high 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field. McGaughey added his fifth career double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) scored nine of his 14 points in the first half as the third QU player in double figures.

Senior guard Jordan Wilson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) gave the Hawks 15 solid minutes off the bench, contributing eight points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Bobby Frasco (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect/Buffalo) scored five points and blocked four shots in 15 minutes as a reserve.

The Hawks won the battle on the glass, 41-35. Emil Ostafiiciuc led the Cardinals with 10 points off the bench. QU limited the Cards to just 34.4 percent (22-for-64) shooting from the floor.

The Hawks return to Pepsi Arena on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. to take on Rockhurst.
