QU Goes 2-0 in Vegas with Win over Western Washington

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 23 Quincy University women's basketball team extended their streak of holding opponents under 70 points to 11 straight games in a 72-62 win over Western Washington University on Saturday (Dec. 19). QU was lights out again from three-point range knocking down 11 treys for 65%. The Lady Hawks went 2-0 in Las Vegas and will enter 2016 with a 10-1 record.

Western Washington (6-4) took an early lead and after a quarter of trading buckets, WWU entered the first intermission with a 14-12 lead.

With three minutes and 47 seconds to play, the Lady Hawks (10-1) trailed 24-21. Anika Webster hit a three on the ensuing possession. QU ended the second quarter on an 11-point run with Webster finishing a layup and Maggie Cunningham knocking down back-to-back triples. The Lady Hawks entered halftime leading 32-24.

Webster led the Lady Hawks with 11 points after one half of play. QU knocked down six 3-pointers on eight attempts.

The Vikings chipped away at the QU lead in the third quarter. The Lady Hawks held the lead thanks to free throw shooting. QU scored six of their 13 points in the third quarter from the foul line. WWU trailed 45-41 at the end of three quarters.

The Lady Hawks opened the fourth quarter with a Kara Gerbus layup and one and an Anika Webster to jump out to a 10 point lead.

Western Washington pulled within one possession with four minutes and 31 seconds to play after a three from Aleisha Hathaway. Kara Gerbus knocked down a pair of free throws and Nikia Edom drilled a big three from the left wing to separate QU and WWU 65-57.

QU sealed the game with eight free throws in the final five minutes of play. QU was 21 of 30 from the charity stripe.

Anika Webster led the Lady Hawks with 17 points and was three-for-three from behind the arc. Maggie Cunningham scored 14 points with three treys, five rebounds, and five assists. Kara Gerbus scored 12 points with seven rebounds and Nikia Edom scored 11 points with three triples. 

Aleisha Hathaway led Western Washington with 24 points.

The Lady Hawks will open the new year in Pepsi Arena on Jan. 2, 2016 when Missouri Valley College comes to Quincy, Ill. to play at 1 p.m.
