Triples Lift Lady Hawks Over Montana State-Billings in Vegas

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 23 Quincy University women's basketball team started the Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas with a 68-56 win over Montana State University Billings on Friday night (Dec. 18). QU shot 50% from the field and knocked down nine threes for a 45% clip. MSU-Billings led in rebounds with 17 of their 35 boards on offense.

Nikia Edom and Anika Webster accounted for seven of the nine threes for the Lady Hawks (9-1). Edom and Webster hit five threes combined in the second half.

Webster started off the game with a three and the Lady Hawks never lost the lead. Quincy held a 17-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Rachel Ruzevich and Maggie Cunningham knocked down threes in the second quarter with Cunningham's triple coming with seven seconds to play in the half. QU entered halftime with a 29-23 lead.

The Lady Hawks held MSU-Billings (5-4) at 26% from the field in the first half. The Yellow Jackets grabbed 21 rebounds in the first half with 11 offensive boards. The Lady Hawks hit 43% of their shots and 44% from beyond the arc.

Kara Gerbus scored six points in the first five minutes of play in the second half. Gerbus and Anika Webster accounted for all 16 points that QU scored in the third quarter. QU led 45-37 at the end of three quarters.

The Lady Hawks finished strong in the fourth quarter scoring 23 points. Nikia Edom knocked down three triples in the final quarter. The Lady Hawks finished to win 68-56 over the Yellow Jackets.

Anika Webster led the Lady Hawks with 15 points and five assists. Maggie Cunningham scored 12 points and four assists. Cunningham and Webster were able to find Nikia Edom around the arc for 14 points including four 3-point field goals. Kara Gerbus scored all of her 14 points in the second half and led the team with six rebounds.

QU finished with 15 assists and 15 turnovers.QU forced 16 turnovers and held the Yellow Jackets without a double-digit scorer. The Lady Hawk defense has not allowed a team to score 70 points or more this season through 10 games.

The Lady Hawks will complete their trip at the Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas with a game against Western Washington University tomorrow (Dec. 19) at 7:45 pm CT.
