Lady Hawks Fall for First Time this Season to Bulldogs

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - No. 23 Quincy University women's basketball fell for the first time this season at Truman State University, 65-62. QU fell behind in the second quarter only to regain the lead with eight minutes and 24 seconds to play in the fourth. TSU took the lead with one minute and six seconds remaining and Kasey Gassensmith closed out the game with two free throws. The Lady Hawks had two chances to tie the game with a three, but could not get the final shots to fall.

Truman State (7-3, 2-1 GLVC) hit 42% from the field and 41% from three with seven triples.

The Lady Hawks (8-1, 2-1 GLVC) shot 40% from the field and just 27% from three.

The Bulldogs grabbed 36 rebounds and scored eight points on second chance opportunities. The Lady Hawks were held to 26 rebounds.

QU was solid defensively in the first quarter as both teams were slow to start. QU led the Bulldogs 15-14 at the first intermission.

Truman State jumped out to a 36-27 lead after outscoring the Lady Hawks 22-12 in the second quarter. Rachel Steinhoff and Linnea Schmelzer each had two triples for TSU in the second quarter.

The Lady Hawks climbed back into the game after halftime with seven points to start the third quarter. QU pulled within two points, 49-47, at the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Hawks regained the lead, after trailing for 22 minutes and 56 seconds, in the fourth quarter when Erin Mennemeyer hit a layup and converted the and one. QU extended the lead to seven points with just over seven minutes to play.

Truman State tied the game at 59-59 with two minutes and 28 seconds to play, but Kara Gerbus answered with a three in the next possession. Kasey Gassensmith scored four of Truman State's last six points from the free throw line and stole the ball when leading by one with 35 second to play.

Truman State gave the Lady Hawks an opportunity with two seconds remaining when they committed an offensive foul to turn the ball over. Carly Beebe's last second three was just off the back of the rim.

Anika Webster and Maggie Cunningham led the Lady Hawks with 13 points. Kara Gerbus notched 12 points. Cunningham led the team with five assists and six rebounds.

Truman State was led by Rachel Steinhoff with 17 points. Kasey Gassensmith and Michalina Tomczak both scored 15 points.

The Lady Hawks travel to Las Vegas to play Montana State-Billings at 7:45 p.m. CT on Friday, Dec. 18.
