Hawks Light Up Lions in 88-72 Road Win

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Quincy University men's basketball team scorched the nets for 15 3-pointers at Hyland  Arena and rolled past Lindenwood, 88-72, on Tuesday (Dec. 1) night in nonconference action.
 
The Hawks (3-3) extended their winning streak to three as they head into Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday (Dec. 3) at Pepsi Arena.
 
On Tuesday, the Hawks' shooting carried them to victory. QU connected on 15-of-23 (65.2 percent) from long range, including four each from senior Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) and junior Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast). The 3-point total is the Hawks' most since they hit 16 in a game at Indianapolis on Jan. 22, 2009.
 
The Hawks led wire-to-wire after bursting out to a 10-4 lead on consecutive triples by junior Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) and Des Jardins.
 
QU went on a run late in the first half as senior Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) scored eight points in a three-and-a-half minute stretch. He knocked down a jumper over a zone defense before viciously throwing down a Senor lob off a back-screen. Eneogwe then made his third straight field goal, Senor followed with a 3-pointer and Eneogwe converted a steal and layup to give QU a 40-25 lead to with 2:46 remaining.
 
Quincy built its first-half lead to as many as 16 points, 45-29, after a short jumper by junior Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC).
 
The Hawks took a 45-31 lead into halftime after going 7-for-11 from 3-point range in the first half and limiting the Lions (4-2) to just 37.9 percent (11-for-29) shooting.
 
QU led by 24 points, 64-40 with 12 minutes remaining following a Des Jardins transition 3-pointer off a steal and feed from Senor.
 
The Hawks held Lindenwood's leading scorer, Cory Arentsen, to just seven points on 2-for-9 shooting. He entered the game averaging 23 points per game.
 
Six Hawks scored in double figures, led by Eneogwe's 16. He also added two rebounds two assists and two blocks. Senor played a terrific floor game with 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in 29 minutes off the bench. McGaughey had 15 points, five rebounds and three blocks.
 
Senior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) was perfect on three 3-point tries, finishing with 15 points. Des Jardins contributed 12 points and three steals and Tagarelli added 10 points.
 
Lindenwood's 7-foot-1 center Stanislas Heili led the Lions with a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds. The hosts won the battle on the glass, 29-25.
 
The Hawks return to the floor on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Pepsi Arena where they open GLVC play against William Jewell.
