Hawks Fall Short of Miraculous Comeback Against Rangers

QUINCY, Ill. - Something clicked in the third set for Quincy University women's volleyball that sparked a comeback emblazoned in the memories of the QU fans in attendance at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Nov. 7). The University of Wisconsin-Parkside was ahead 2-0 and looking to head home with a 3-0 win. The Hawks had other plans. QU sent the match to five sets with stunning defensive plays and long rallies that extended the time of the game to two hours and 25 minutes. UW-Parkside was able to escape Quincy, Ill. with a 3-2 win in what was the best performance in Pepsi Arena so far this season.

Trailing 4-3 early in the third set, the Hawks (12-16, 6-9 GLVC) fired off five straight points to take an 8-4 lead. UW-Parkside (19-8, 10-5 GLVC) managed to chip the lead down to 24-23 to force a QU timeout. After the stoppage, Rachel Rush sent the set winning kill down the near sideline to give the Hawks the 25-23 win.

The Rangers responded in the fourth set to take an 18-13 lead. Again, the Hawks continued to fight and rallied for five straight points to pull within one.

UW-Parkside led 22-20 in the fourth set when Jessica Licurgo ignited another rally with a kill. After a Ranger attacking error the score was tied at 22.

The next point saw Taylor McMonagle dive into the stands on the other side of the net to save the point. The long rally continued with two diving digs by Nicole Allaria and eventually the QU defense forced a Ranger attacking error to give the Hawks a 23-22 lead and force a UW-Parkside timeout. On the other end of the stoppage, Licurgo served an ace and Emily Lindemulder crushed a kill to ignite the crowd and send the match to a fifth set.

The Rangers went on runs of four and five points in the fifth set to take a 13-6 lead. Bekah Raebel and Miranda Rodriguez subbed in and the QU offense took off. Raebel had two kills and a block assist in a five-point run for the Hawks.

The Rangers called a timeout leading 13-11. Following the timeout, Lexi Turek sent a ball to the opposite sideline. The play was originally ruled out, but was overturned to a kill for the Rangers giving the away team match point.

Taylor McMonagle recorded a kill, but the Hawks could not continue the comeback and fell 15-12 following an attacking error.

The Rangers won the first set 25-21, and the second set 25-22.

The Hawks were led by Taylor McMonagle with 23 digs, eight kills, and three blocks. Nicole Allaria came off the bench with 21 digs for QU. Miranda Rodriguez and Cassandra Cahill both recorded double-doubles with 17 assists and 12 digs, and 24 assists and 10 digs respectively. Emily Lindemulder led the offense with 11 kills and also finished with seven blocks. Jessica Licurgo had seven blocks and seven kills for the Hawks.

The Hawks welcome Truman State University to Pepsi Arena on Tuesday (Nov. 10) at 7 p.m.
