Quincy Overcomes 4th Quarter Deficit, Beats UCM

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team came back from a 10-point second half deficit on Saturday (Nov. 28) at Pepsi Arena to defeat Central Missouri, 68-65, and stay undefeated.

The Lady Hawks (5-0) have now beaten five in-region opponents entering GLVC play, which starts Thursday (Dec. 3) night against William Jewell.

Quincy led by six, 32-26, at halftime after starting the game on a 21-6 run over the first 11-plus minutes. The Jennies (1-4) cut into the Lady Hawks' advantage after the break and took their first lead, 39-38, since the opening minutes on a 3-pointer by Andee Wahlert with 4:52 left in the third quarter.

UCM built its lead up to 10, 52-42, with 1:16 left in the third quarter before back-to-back buckets by senior Erin Mennemeyer (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) and sophomore Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) closed the quarter.

Quincy continued its run into the fourth quarter, tying the game, 56-56, on a layup by senior Maggie Cunningham (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) with 5:34 to play.

The teams then traded baskets before sophomore Megan Wienstroer (Okawville, Ill.) scored the next five points. She buried a triple with 3:37 to play that gave Quincy a 61-58 lead. After a defensive stop, she cleaned up the offensive glass with a put-back to push QU's lead up to five, 63-58.

The Jennies responded with their own 5-0 run and tied the game, 63-63, on Tayler Weiks' 3-pointer with one minute left.

Webster then split a pair at the line before the Lady Hawks forced a turnover with 27 seconds remaining. Cunningham sank a couple free throws to stretch the lead to 66-63. On the other end, Weiks missed a 3-pointer, but Ashley Jones converted off the offensive glass to cut it to 66-65 with 11 seconds remaining.

The Jennies then fouled Cunningham on the inbound and the senior drained both at the line. A final 3-pointer by Jones rattled in and out to seal the Lady Hawks' win.

Quincy shot 45.5 percent (25-for-55) from the field and held the Jennies to 41.9 percent (26-for-62) from the floor. The Lady Hawks won the battle on the glass, 35-34.

Cunningham finished with a game-high 18 points to go with eight assists and five rebounds. She was 8-for-8 at the line. Mennemeyer contributed her fourth career double-double with 12 points and 11 boards in 25 minutes off the bench. Wienstroer was the third QU player in double figures with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Shelby Winkelmann paced the Jennies with 17 points on 8-for-14 shooting.
