Upset Bid Falls Short At Division I Illinois State

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team saw its upset bid against Division I Illinois State fall short in an exhibition on Friday (Nov. 27) afternoon as the Redbirds escaped with a 73-63 win over the Hawks in Normal. The game counted as a regular season contest for Illinois State.

The Hawks led for portions of the second half, including a 61-58 lead with eight minutes to play. The Redbirds then turned up their defensive execution and closed the game on a 15-2 run from that point, holding Quincy to 1-for-16 shooting in the final eight minutes.

Overall, Quincy (2-3) attempted 29 more shots from the field by forcing 16 turnovers and winning the battle on the offensive glass, 15-5. Junior Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) finished with a game-high 12 rebounds to go with eight points and four assists.

The Redbirds (3-4) – coming off a couple of 11-point losses to No. 2 Maryland and TCU in Cancun, Mexico – led wire-to-wire in the first half after scoring the game's first six points.

QU stayed with the hosts by drilling seven 3-pointers in the first half on 18 attempts. Five different Hawks hit threes in the opening frame, including two each by junior Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) and senior Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods).

The Hawks trailed by eight, 47-39, with 16:51 to play in the game before the Hawks ripped off the next 10 points to take a two-point lead, 49-47. Junior Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Kirkwood CC) bookended the run with jumpers sandwiched around a McGaughey three-point play and Senor's triple.

McGaughey's 3-pointer with 11:48 remaining gave the Hawks a 54-51 lead and junior Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Western Michigan) knocked down a trey to take a 61-58 lead with 8:24 remaining.

From there, the Hawks went cold from the field as Illinois State took over the remainder of the game. Tagarelli's layup with 4:40 remaining was the Hawks' only field goal in the last eight minutes of the game and it trimmed ISU's lead to 64-63. The Redbirds made just one bucket the rest of the way, but they sank their free throws to secure their third win of the season.

Tagarelli led the Hawks with 12 points to go with seven boards and three assists. Senor II chipped in 11 points while senior Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) counted 10 points and four boards.

The Hawks shot 33 percent (24-for-76) from the field, including an 11-for-33 mark from 3-point range. The Redbirds were good on 47 percent (22-for-47) of their shots, going 8-for-16 from long distance.

Illinois State held a 44-40 edge on the glass, though the Hawks turned 16 ISU turnovers into 18 points.

The Hawks return to the court on Tuesday (Dec. 1) when they take on Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
