Hawks Roll Early In 74-48 Win over HLGU

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team strolled to a 26-7 lead in the opening minutes on its way to a 74-48 win over Hannibal-LaGrange on Wednesday (Nov. 25) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (2-3) were efficient offensively at the outset and consistently turned Trojan turnovers into easy transition baskets. Quincy out-scored Hannibal-LaGrange (2-2) on the fastbreak, 16-2, in the first half alone.

At one point, the Hawks led 18-3 after a steal by senior Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) turned into a layup for junior Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Kirkwood CC), who paced the Hawks with 19 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Tagarelli knocked down back-to-back short jumpers to push the lead to 26-7 with 11:34 to play in the first half.

Both teams went into a bit of a drought after that as a 3-pointer by senior Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State) snapped a three-plus minute scoring lapse for the Hawks. The defense did not let up as the Trojans hit just one of their six shots in that stretch.

Quincy took its largest lead of the game, 40-20, into halftime after a Tagarelli jumper and a fastbreak layup by junior Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) closed the half.

The Trojans never got closer than 16 points in the second half as the Hawks maintained their lead and continued to suppress the HLGU offense.

Quincy held Hannibal-LaGrange to just 30.4 percent (17-for-56) shooting in the game, including a 26.9 percent (7-for-26) mark in the first half. QU also won the battle on the glass, 40-32. The Hawks shot 50.8 percent (30-for-59) from the floor.

Jackson added 16 points and four steals to the effort, while junior Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) contributed 13 points and six rebounds. Junior Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) was the fourth QU player in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds.

Senor filled up the stat sheet in 18 minutes off the bench with seven points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Senior Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) blocked a career-high four shots.

D'Avonte Garland led the Trojans with 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Wyatt Stephens scored eight off the bench.

The Hawks will return to the court on Friday (Nov. 27) when they travel to Normal to take on Division I Illinois State in an exhibition contest. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
