QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team took command of a close game in the second quarter and never trailed in the second half on its way to a 77-69 win over in-region opponent Lindenwood at Pepsi Arena on Sunday (Nov. 22). QU is unbeaten through four games this season.

The game was the finale of the 16th Annual QU Subway Tip-Off Classic, which the Lady Hawks won for the third straight year and for the seventh time in eight seasons.

Sophomore forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) was named the tournament MVP, finishing with 18 points and seven rebounds in the game.

The Lady Hawks and Lions traded blows for much of the first quarter, which featured six tie scores and three lead changes. Neither team led by more than four in the opening stanza and the Lions led, 24-21, going into the second.

Quincy (4-0) turned up its defensive intensity midway through the second quarter, keeping the Lions (3-2) off the board for the final five minutes. The Lady Hawks forced the visitors to go 0-for-5 with four turnovers in that stretch as they went on an 11-0 run to take a 40-31 lead into halftime.

The Lady Hawks continued their run into the second half by scoring the first nine points to further tighten their grip on the game. Webster's with 7:05 left in the third quarter stretched Quincy's lead to 49-31.

Lindenwood chipped into the lead in the fourth quarter, but never got to within two possessions as the Lady Hawks were hampered by 12 turnovers in the second half.

Four players were in double figures for Quincy. Senior Maggie Cunningham (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) scored 15 points (12-for-12 from the line) to go with five assists. Senior Kara Gerbus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin) added 14 points, four boards, two blocks and two steals. Junior Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) was the final player in double figures with 12 points.

Gerbus joined Webster on the all-tournament team. Lindenwood's Kassidy Gengenbacher (29 points) and Charisse Williams (10 points, five steals) also made the tournament team. Karlisa Harris of Robert Morris-Peoria was the final member of the all-tournament team.
