QU Defense Shines in Exhibition Against MacMurray

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team started the 16th Annual QU Subway Tip-Off Classic with a 95-14 win over MacMurray College in an exhibition game on Saturday (Nov. 21). QU was supposed to play Robert Morris University-Springfield, but RMU-S canceled their season in September leaving the Lady Hawks scrambling to find another team for the annual tip-off. 14 of 15 Lady Hawks scored in the exhibition and QU stole the ball from MC 29 times and forced 41 turnovers.

The Lady Hawks scored 57 points off turnovers and 60 points in the paint. The forwards led the team in scoring. Anika Webster totaled 13 points, Sarah Schumacher netted 11 points, Jessie Rabas scored 10 points, and Erin Mennemeyer notched nine. Kara Gerbus and Makinze Roman each scored seven for QU.

Maggie Cunningham led the QU defense with eight steals. The senior guard finished with five rebounds, six points, and six assists. QU had 25 assists and 14 turnovers in the game.

Lauren Gronewold led QU with six rebounds as the Lady Hawks grabbed 46 boards to the Highlanders' 25.

MacMurray was held to 4-of-34 from the field hitting one field goal in the first half. At halftime, the Lady Hawks led 49-4.

The Lady Hawks finished shooting 55% from the floor.

The Lady Hawks will take on Lindenwood University tomorrow (Nov. 22) at 3 p.m. in Pepsi Arena. With both QU and LWU winning today, the winner between the two tomorrow will be crowned the 16th QU Subway Tip-Off Classic Champion.
